Q: I am contemplating purchasing a set of four Victoria Ghost chairs for our kitchen. Our space isn't huge and with two young kids with sticky fingers these transparent plastic chairs fit the bill. My only concern is how scratched up they will get. Anyone own these and care to comment? Thanks!

White Enamel Flatwa...
I own four of them for 2 years. I have heard from others that they scratch easily but mine so far are not scratched
(maybe because I only use them occasionally and my house is kids-free) BUT they attract the dust like magnets and also it is really hard to make them look crystal clear. I guess that little sticky fingers will not make things any better...
I forgot to add that even if it is painful to clean them they look really cool in a small place because they occupy no visual space. but if you are going for transparent chairs why not go for another model? the ghost is in every other house lately.
I have 2 of the clear Louis Ghost chairs (the ones with arms) and yes, they do scratch. Things like rivets on jeans, small children racing their little toy cars on them, banging on them with things like Leggo's will definitely scratch them. I've had mine a few yrs now and though they are a little scratched, they do still look pretty good. If you are someone who is meticulous about a scratch, then these chairs would not be a good fit. But, if you can accept the scratches as adding character to the chairs... they are fun and very comfortable! They do attract dust like magnets... and pollen from open windows! I still would not give mine up. :-)
ok 3d comment in a row. check out this chair http://www.4-pieds.com/1393-lot-de-deux-chaises-design-calligaris-wien-en-plexi.html
in white and transparent. if I where to change my ghost that is what I would go for and I think they are way more practical than the ghost (less plexi)
You can also get the "Ghost" line of chairs in opaque white or black, if you're afraid of the scratches and dust showing up too badly.
I own these chairs but in white and they are AMAZING with kids. I love that each one only costs $20! The look is super modern and clean; I have had so many comments on how great they look.. and I can wipe them down really easily with just water and they clean up and shine. They don't scratch easily and they stack on top of each other, making floor washing a cake walk.
They scratch easily...love them, but more of a sculptural chair...
A high-end furniture store in my neighborhood has a basement with damaged furniture at discount prices. Ghost chairs are ALWAYS in the basement scratched up (as are mirrored vanities with broken mirror). I don't know how much it took to scratch them, but scratch they do.
Lisa– mind if I ask which store?
I've found that they do scratch easily, which is why it's nice to have a single one as an accent piece/extra chair (plus I think a whole set looks odd outside a design magazine or sterile hotel).
I own a pair of the Black Ghost Chairs and they do Scratch with use. I would also have to agree with the dust magnet comments above. However, you will notice that at the Starck restaurants, he typically uses the White Victoria chairs which see A LOT of daily use and stacking and they seem to hold up very well visually. Surface scratches and dust seem to blend in better with white.
I don't know if you're familiar with how easily professional set squares (clear acrylic or something similar, for drafting) scratch up. The Victoria Ghost scratches just the same way, by what I've found
I'm not sure if these are made of standard acrylic plexi, but you can use toothpaste (paste, not gel) to get out scratches - as opposed to an expensive and hard to find plexi cleaner. However, plexi cleaners help reduce static.
I've spoken to event rental companies about these chairs and how they keep them scratch free (and yes, they will scratch)....
Depending on whether your chairs are made of acrylic plexiglass, lexan, or plastic, you can find a variety of scratch removal or repair creams and pastes online or in your local hardware store. Some companies that sell these chairs will also sell scratch removal/repair products. Try something like Xerapol or Novus, and always ALWAYS test any product in a relatively inconspicuous area first.
Good luck.
Thanks so much for all your excellent information! I am not bothered by dust. We have very dark wood floors and the swiffer has sadly become my best friend, and with two young kids I'm forever cleaning whatever chairs they sit on anyway. A bunch of scraches don't bother me either (it's those two young kids with toy cars on our dark wood floors again!). It's more that they aren't so cheap that I won't be bothered if they look like junk after a few months. They are made of polycarbonate. There are knock offs out their made of acrylic which I think you can sand scratches out of. Hmmmm...
I have 4 of these in my kitchen that, yes, do scratch. Its a bit out of the ordinary, but I use Meguiar's brand (automotive) Scratch-X gel. Its for use on clear plastic headlamp lenses and convertible windows but it does a fantastic job on my chairs. Its about 6-8 dollars and can be found at Pep-Boys and places like that.
let it be ,scratch , like a scar of ghost , with fluorescent ,Kartell stuff they are looking like a cheap plastic but when they are washed by some kind of strong halogen ,it look more like a piece jewelry, you will be blind of scratch because of the sparkle effect . that you have to play with it
I used to work for a well known froyo company with lots of stores and saw dozens upon dozens of Ghost Chairs get heavily used without any major damage. I replaced many a stool but never once did we have a Ghost Chair that was damaged or even too scratched up even after a couple years. You'll see some light scratches depending on how you use them, but they're surprisingly comfortable and sturdy. I saw go for it. You won't be disappointed.
If you're a real scratchophobe, you should probably give these chairs a miss. They do scratch easily, and the scratches can’t be unscratched.
Having said that, from a distance you won't notice the marks, and they'll end up just being a part of the chair after a while of use and won't bother most people.
If you're in Australia and looking for a high quality replica Ghost chair, I bought mine from Baobab. They're a few dollars more than what you can get replicas for elsewhere, but still great value and the difference is well worth it as the chairs are crystal clear, just like the originals - a lot of the replicas around are not 100% clear and far from Kartell quality. They also deliver for free, which is nice.
You may have the polycarbonate ghost chairs. I realized that some of these ghost chairs are acrylic and some are made of poycarbonate. Polycarbonate scratches, acrylic doesn't. Acrylic chips easier than polycarbonate, but polycarbonate tends to yellow when exposed to UV light.
