Yesterday over at Unplggd, we asked the question of Do You Name Your Gadgets and Gear. The results are extremely nerdy with many chiming in with an astounding yes! This morning we realized that we name more than that as we moved Dorthy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia into our new home. That's right... they're our house plants!
Even though there's many things in our home we don't name, it seems fitting that every living thing has a name as well. We usually tend to stick with themes (one year we named our tomato plants after Motown signers) for each grouping of items, but as much time as we spend with the objects in our lives, why not let them have a little personality.
Do you name your plants? Or are we the only ones? Let us know yes or know plus the names if you've got them in the comments below!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Yes I do! My ficus is named Keith.
Yes, for some reason they're French -- Gustav, Francois, and Gerard Depardieu -- which makes no sense since I speak as much French as Joey Tribbiani.
But I have two other plants that remain unnamed because nothing has sounded right. Nothing is quite so annoying as someone trying to force a name that's just not taking.
No. It's bad enough that I kill them all...it would be worst if they had names.
I've had a Gary, Moin, Oliver, and Edward - each one for an undergrad year. Unfortunately, none survived the move home in April :-(
Of course...but then again they're my "pets" since I'm allergic to everything else.
My jade plants are around 10 years old and have the names Sinead and Garfunkel. The violet is Violette, and she's been kicking it for a while too.
On Colbert last night he mentioned a study that showed how plants have a memory-so be nice to them!
I've named a bamboo plant Doug. :)
What is the plant in the picture above??
I have a plant that a friend gave me when my mother died...26 years ago!
In spite of my not treating it the way I should, it seems to love me anyway, just like Mom did.
I call it "Florence".
i have a philodendron named ethel. she's been with me for 12 years now (!). bought her at harris teeter during my first semester of college. she has had lots of babies, all of which are named...baby ethel :)
Oh definitely. I name all my house plants (and and major appliances). However all plants must have a name starting with "F". My appliances are not limited to a specific letter. Hee.
My boyfriend and I have a powder puff cactus named Harry and a ficus named Sloopy ("Hang on Sloopy" came on the radio when we brought her home). We also have 4 orchids, but they don't have names :(
I thought I was the only one! I have a devil's ivy named Esther and a ficus named Liesl.
All of mine have names . . . and I actually have some named after the Golden Girls, myself.
I have John the lavender, Jean the cactus and Whai the unknown flower
I used to have a lucky bamboo plant named Frank, but then my cat went to town on him and I had to get rid of him. My philodendron is of course named Phil. I seem to be accumulating too many plants lately to name all of them, though.
Oh yes. :) A nice little variegated palm like plant named Alphie but sadly his friend Bernquist the begonia bit the dust a while back and the orchid that tried to move in didn't last long enough to get a name. We aren't much for watering....
This is funny stuff!
seriously?
Furniture, vaccums, plants...I name everything! I believe that if you put a name to something that you own, you will take better care of it. I have no idea what types of plants I have but their names are Planty (the original, I've had it for nearly 20 yrs), Georgia, Peanut and Hilda :)
My parents bought me a plain ivy plant at Walmart when they dropped me off at uni... I named him Gomez and he was a fighter. Had him all four yrs and before he passed on my mom took some cuttings from him.
My Orchid is Frankie (a dude), and my two little basil plants are Ernie and Bert casuse one is tall and the other is short and wide.
My plant is named Audrey, and I love to introduce her to people that hate leather, animal skins, and stuffed animals. 8^)
The succulent on my dining room table is named Buford. We'll see about the others...
We had a "donkey tail" plant that we named Mr. Jackass.
My plants are definitely my "babies"...but, no, I don't name them. It never occurred to me...maybe I'll start... :)
I have about 40 plants, and I don't name them. Except for one vine I called Sylvia, after the vine-covered Sylvia Hotel in Vancouver!
I have a variegated pathos named Angela, after the person who bequeathed it to me. I also have a small palm called "Green Plant" because that's what the label said it was. Green Plant is slowly dying because I can't figure out a watering schedule. I hope it's not in pain.
We named the first couple of trees we planted in the yard. We pretended the dog named them, so we have a bald cypress named "Hot Dog" and a Japanese maple named "Kolache."
Non-related post.. but does anyone know what kind of plant is in the picture? It looks adorable!
I have a Felix and Steve. The rest are unnamed.
I too am curious what sort of plant is shown in the picture. It is indeed very cute :-)
The plant above is a String Of Pearls (or beads depending on your nursery). It's great in all sorts of lighting situations!
my boyfriend named his eggling plant edgar! http://www.eggling.com/
Absolutely!
I have Sofia the succulent, Bruce the lavender plant, Daisy the....daisy plant....and I have two more succulents awaiting names.
However, my proudest naming is that of my car: Gloria. Quite possibly the best name I've ever given anything.
Plants are like the stepping stone for pets (and then kids, if that's a path), so hell yes I name mine:
Micah (after Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson)
Dalea (after letters from my immediate family's first names)
Alex (after Alexander Hamilton)
Cora (after coral in color)
Cinderella (after the Disney character)
Betty (after Betty White)
J'Taime (after two important men)
You can read the story about them here. They each have their own little personality and I love that they bright up my house in their own way.

My pineapple plant is named James after James Dole. Unfortunately I can't remember anymore if I grew James from a Dole (Oahu) pineapple or a Maui pineapple. Haven't gotten around to naming my other 3 pineapple plants.
What? It never occurred to me to do that.
i have many plants, but i've ever only named one: bruce the spruce. bruce died soon after i'd named him... but i don't think that's why i haven't named any of my other plants.
however, we randomly name spiders in our place. not that we can tell the difference between them. we just call them "gary", "glenn", or "gladys." not sure why they all start with "g"...
I have a 43-year-old snake plant named Spot. He's great.
I have lots of plants, but only a few of them have names. My huge jade is "Miss Freddie" for the coworker who passed her on to me when she retired from her other teaching job and had to move her plants out of her classroom.
There was a forsythia at my old house that my ex husband I called "Buzz Osborne" after the lead singer of the Melvins. This thing grew as large and crazy as King Buzzo's hair, year after year after year--no matter how much we cut it back!
I do! I love my Mr. Tall Tree LOL and he seems to like it :) ....
we call our 8 foot tall bird of paradise plant, "Big Boy." The myriad of orchids are called, simply, "the girls." Other plants don't have names. Except 'Harry' but he has since passed.
that plant looks awesome :)
I name all my plants girl names. They must all start with the letter "E" (like sdblondie's F)
Mostly, they are spanish names..
I have Elvira, Esperanza, Emila, Estella, Elefanta (lol), Esther, Esmeralda.
And my dog gets so jealous when I start talking to them! glad to know I'm not alone...
I had a Dumb Cain named Duncan.
I currently have a Bromeliad named Burton. Well, he was named Burton until he bloomed (you have to cut off the dead bloom in order to not kill the plant). He is now a she, and she is named Vanessa :)
I also have a plant named Mama McClung. She's a mother in law's tongue.
I gave a friend a plant named Aretha Colleen. She was an Orchid Copper Queen.
I gave someone else a prayer plant named Pope John Paul the Third (because the name Pope John Paul the Second was taken, obviously).
I love naming plants!
Jessamy! "Sofia the succulent"!!! That's awesome.
No i have never thought to name my houseplants,
tho i did transplant some houseplants yesterday, and watered.
