We dream about one day having a bit of land (or at least a backyard!) where we could put up a little shed or tiny house and turn it into our own private getaway: a studio space, perhaps, or an office; a reading room, or maybe a guest house. Some place "other." We think it's important to have a place of your own, and it's even better if you've truly made it your own by building, renovating, or converting an outdoor space into something personal and useful. Have you done this? Tell us your experiences below!

Nomade Express Slee...
I haven't done this but i am planning to soon. I want to build one that doubles as a yoga studio and a small room.
A yoga studio! Yes, I'd love that, too.
Seattle passed a great cottage permits expansion last year (previously only people owning property in designated areas were allowed to build a cottage). I’d love to build one and use as a little get-away – an art studio filled with plants. They are so much more inviting than basements…
Yes! I have one and it is my yoga room. When we moved in late last year we immediately removed the asbestos roof and gave it a thorough clean. It still needs painting and the floor needs varnish but it is a wonderful space. The spare back room is really appreciated when the house is quite small and allows a tiny getaway. These photos are great inspiration.
Yes we do! My husband built a simple rectangular box. There's a small ensuite and he put in bi-folds all along one wall, so that it opens out onto the garden. There are symmetrical built-in desks/shelves either end (one each) and in the middle we have a sofa-bed, great for just relaxing, but when guests come they have their own space.
It took him (and his brother and our dads) a few months (plus months before that sourcing affordable/second hand materials), but with five kids it has been a godsend!
I sort of do... The shed in the back of my house is not in great shape, but it DOES have electricity. My husband and I want to replace it with something sturdier and nicer, also with electricity, where he can do his writing once we have kids and his office becomes a nursery. ;-) With any luck I'll be able to turn a corner of our laundry room into a little jewelry studio for myself, but if that doesn't pan out I'll have to claim a corner of the new shed. ;-)
I have a humble woodshop/shed. Too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer, and no place I'd rather be.

Oh man, I want to kick my landlord's stupid non-functioning hot tub out of our shed and take over!
Hmmm... these are bigger than my NYC apartment. I need to rethink my living arrangements.
we've got a great space that i want to convert into a recording room. it doesnt have to be "sound proof", but im looking into insulation and sheetrock ideas to keep the noise down. anyone have any experience with this as a DIY. thanks
I have one of these! We had an old disgusting tool shed that we converted into a beautiful little outdoor room. I honestly wanted to tear it down, it was such an eyesore. Now, it might just be my favorite (summer) spot in the house. All we had to do was add windows, electricity, and some paint. Poof! Completely transformed. It was well worth the effort.
Hi, portlandsunshine! I love your blog!
I would love to convert our cute little shed into a cottage office space, or even a little shady hideaway for the children. It is way too full of scrap lumber and other miscellany at this point, though.

i would love to
airstreams are a great idea for this as well!!! check out the airstream our company revamped into a rolling bar on wheels for country singer miranda lambert - http://junkgypsyblog.com/category/airstream-chronicles/
My wife and I both run home-based businesses. Once we outgrew the dining room table we knew we needed a "real" office to keep our sanity. So, we built our office shed dubbed our "World Shedquarters" ourselves and are loving every minute of it! You can check it out at http://danielhayes.me/build-an-office-shed
Would love a small guesthouse turned into an art studio to paint....just for myself in the backyard!!! #dream #art
