We first noticed it when our little guy was as fixated on Lost as we were every Tuesday night, but it turns out that plenty of pets love watching TV. Whether they're watching Animal Planet or just run to the door barking whenever they hear an on-screen doorbell, does your pet tune in to your TV?
Bacon, the Boston Terrier who you might remember from the Home Hacks post on "How To Prep Your Home Tech for a New Pet," can't get enough of Lost. Something about Jack Shepard's voice makes him perk up and gaze into the small screen for minutes at a time—a massive attention span that Bacon can't even dedicate to his food.
But he's not alone. We've heard of dogs that love to watch "Animal Cops," they'll run around the back of the screen trying to figure out where the dogs went, and cats that can't tear their eyes (or paws!) away from fast-moving NASCAR races.
While it's definitely fun to watch and laugh at (the reason you got a kitten, admit it), you need to be careful with pets that want to make TV watching an interactive experience.
If you ever notice your pooch or kitty getting a little too active around your expensive gadget, make sure you take precautions to protect your stuff.

Commercial Flour Sa...
My cat's favorite show was Meerkats on animal planet. I used to DVR it for him. LOL
One of my cats goes nuts whenever we watch animal planet, especially if there is a big cat on screen. She always tries to jump up on the tv stand and play with it (seeing as she's half maine coon, that's a little hard...and hilarious).
I also have a 16 year old calico that is OBSESSED with Golden Girls. If its on, she's parked at the tv.
My parents' cat loves the Charlie Brown Halloween and Christmas specials. He likes to watch the news in the morning, too.
my cat loves tv. she can usually be found completely blocking my ability to use the remote. my sister's cat on the other hand doesn't even seem to be able to see the tv or at least she really, really doesn't care about it.
My dog has never had a taste for TV, but my foster pup did. I found out when she was sitting next to me on the couch and a friend sent me a clip from Lady and the Tramp. Couldn't tear her away from it!
My husband said our lab, a bird dog, was transfixed by "Swan Lake", but never noticed anything else on tv.
Ever since reading "The Art of Racing in the Rain" I started leaving the TV on for my dogs when I go to work... just in case they are secretly cognizant souls soon to be reincarnated as people. :) We mix it up between Animal Planet, Discovery and the Food Network.
My kitty used to adore the Crocodile Hunter! His current fave is our dvd set of the miniseries Rome, I think because of all the violence. When we're too busy around the house to play with him, we play one of his shows for him, and he sits and watches the whole thing.
One of my cats looooves Karaoke!! Whenever we're singing Karaoke with our TV, she would come over, sit next to the screen, and sing with us! She especially loves songs with high pitched notes, like Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey. I guess in this case she's more attracted to sounds than the TV...
I had a tortoiseshell cat who loved Martha Stewart (pre-incarceration). She also had a penchant for movies with things blowing up.
My cat Lola ignores the tv until Shark Week, she loves watching them breach!
One of my cats love all animal programs... if you put a pillow between her and the TV she moves so she can see better... I Love it... I wish she could tell me what she thinks!
Yes! One of my dogs could be quite interactive with any animal on the screen. With children and people he just watch quietly. It was so cool... we could see he was paying attention.
When my dog was a puppy he was barking back at kommissar Rex, and even went as far as sniffing behind the tv looking for him. He still does that from time to time (I'm thinking of "eight bellow" the movie, that was fun for him!).
The weirdest thing though is that whenever there are closing bottom-to-top credits he just sits there staring at the screen, religiously watching all those letters fill the screen. When it's over and we're back to normal-image viewing he's not that interested anymore!!!
Oh, and I usually leave the tv on for him when he's left alone, preferably on a documentary channel.
My kitties aren't fixed on any one show, but sometimes they do watch some TV- they sit on the couch and stare at the screen. Of course, I have weird cats and they like to imitate my husband. Seriously- they watch him, arrange themselves to be sitting like he is, and stare at what he's staring at.
I did dog sit two dogs once who needed a TV. They also didn't need particular show, but just having the voice in the house calmed them down. They were used to a family in the house, and the TV seemed to make them feel like other people were around.
My cat's all time favorite was David Attenborough's Birds of Paradise. He hopped up on the media console and started pacing back and forth in front of the tv. He got a little too anxious for my liking though, so he had to watch tv from the floor.
Coincidentally, he also seemed to really enjoy Disney's "Aristocats."
Thomas, the cat, loves the Westminster Dog Show.
The first year I thought it was a fluke that he watched so intently, but the next year, again he would sit in front of the television for up to a half hour at a time. This year the same thing, other programing does not seem to capture his attention like the proud pups of the Westminster!
My ex's Norfolk Terrier, Gertrude Rose, is a TV JUNKIE.
Anything with animals in it.
Anything with a doorbell in it makes her cuh-RA-zy.
And don't even mention the Beggin's Strips commercial, shot form the POV of the dog.
She also got to the point where if she recognized the THEME music or intro to a commercial with a dog or animal in it, she'd come running.
She also has a habit, if the animal moves off screen, to then try to look behind the TV to find out where it went. Once, when watching a horse and carriage on Sex & the City, she followed where it *would* have gone, and went to the living room window to find it.
One of my cats reacts to the sound of cats, especially big cats on TV, and occasionally chases very fast things he sees on the TV (bugs, birds, race cars) but only if he's not in my lap. If he's in my lap, his head will swivel but he realizes it's the TV and seems embarrassed, he very quickly resumes his 'I'm utterly bored and can't be bothered' demeanor.
I can put my cat right up next to the TV or computer screen and he won't look at it or seem in any way to notice that it's on.
Silly, dumb little kitty.
One of our cats just loves Sunrise Earth, an early morning program which features the sights and sounds of nature landscapes but no dialogue. The tweeting of the onscreen birds and the movement of the animals sends her into a tail-whipping, cackling frenzy every time.
Too funny!
I feel like I'm missing out; none of my pets have ever shown any interest in the tv, except that the dogs always think the doorbell is real and will bark like crazy at our front door.
Of all things, my rabbit loved to watch Scrubs. I wasn't too crazy about the show, but he would be fixated on the screen any time it came on. He never sat & watched any other shows. I still haven't figured it out.
My cats often watch TV on my lap. As I scroll down the page to read this one of them is sat next to my computer screen pouncing and pawing at it. She also follows the cursor as I move it around the screen and watches the word as I type.
She just seems to love any movement on the screen.
Our torty likes to watch action movies with my husband. She settles into "her" video game chair...the more explosions the better.
Our dog used to bark at doorbells on TV even though we had never had one...something he picked up from his original owners. He's been gone for 2 years now, but the cats still react to his imaginary bark when they hear a doorbell on TV. In so many ways his legacy lives on in our home. :D
Just like norahl, my cat Tyson LOVED watching the Westminster Dog Show two years ago. So when February rolled around, we made sure he was watching Westminster again. Sure enough, Tyson perks up when the judges make the handlers run the pooches down the astroturf.
Also, Tyson enjoyed an Animal Planet show called "Dogs 101."
My sister used to have a pet rat years ago that loved to watch Miami Vice; I think it was all the movement on the screen.
my cat loves the KCET orchestras. She'll pat at the violinists and the conductor. Absolutely adorable.
