Obviously, younger babies will most likely nap in a safe place like their crib, but what about napping for older toddlers or preschoolers?
Some older toddlers become so resistant to going to their bedroom to sleep that some suggest putting down a mat on the floor. Eventually, the child will sleep. If your child is in daycare or school- this is probably what they're doing for nap time anyway.

My oldest daughter (when around aged four) fell asleep daily after preschool in the oddest position.
Leaning against an otterman on the floor in a praying posture. Playing with her Polly Pockets while I chatted to her from accross the room, while cleaning up the kitchen.
She would sleep like this for atleast two hours and then awaken refreshed without a complaint.
My noise or the babies or even her brother returning from kindy didn't even make her stir.
Very odd position though...................
Yes, when my son was nearing age 5 (before he started kindergarten) he would definitely need a nap on most days. Sometimes he would just lay in his bed quietly, but other times we would make a "nest" for him on the living room floor with his pillow, blanket and a book. I had an infant at the time who was also napping, so I would lie on the couch to rest and my 5 yr old would fall asleep as well!
This is very timely as my daughter has been sick this week and has been refusing to nap in her room. I finally gave in and let her sleep on the couch. She slept more soundly and longer while on the couch and I was still able to get things done. She only seems to protest at naptime, not bedtime, so I don't think it's a bad thing.
My 3 year old has taken to napping on the couch. Once he falls as sleep I am able to get done what I need to get done, even pounding nails. The biggest issue is getting him to actually fall asleep.
my son is 2.5 and he naps on the sofa. he's not a light sleeper by anymeans and can sleep through anything. we also have one of those small pull out sofa's that they sell in walmart, toysrus, etc for kids and he's on a few occassions pulled that out and slept on that as well.
My 17-month old naps in a big pillow-style dog bed (we don't have a dog, this was purchased for him) in the corner of our family room. It is on the ground and safe, near me so he isn't upset when he wakes up and keeps him accustomed to the noise that I make while I am cooking and cleaning. Plus it is easy to bring along if we drive to the grandparent's so he has a familiar place to nap. We'll see if this still works when there are more kids!
My young toddler *won't* sleep anywhere but her crib (or the carseat/stroller if we happen to be going somewhere, or in my arms if she's exhausted enough). If we don't put her in the crib when she's tired, she'll just keep going and going until she runs herself miserable and ragged.
The only way I can get my one-year old and four year old to nap at the same time is to lie down with them in my bed. They seem to comfort one another while they sleep and sleep more soundly than they would independently.
If my toddler falls asleep in the car on the way home, I bring her in and put her either on the rug or in the papasan. I can't carry her farther than that.
She seldom needs a nap, when she does - she sleeps next to me or in her room.
As the mom of 3, I'll take a nap whenever and wherever I can get it. It is a luxury to have a toddler sleep. And when they get older, it is even harder to get some quiet time.
my 2.5 year naps on the couch, and i usually have to cuddle with him a bit to get him to fall asleep- unless he's dead tired and will get up on the couch to sleep himself. we have a tri-level so i do my upstairs or downstairs cleaning/laundry with him on the middle floor and i can keep an eye on him.
my son likes a cuddle before nap - but will sleep anywhere, sometimes his bed, sometimes mine, sometimes the couch. I find it handy because he will would nap when we were out, an hour in starbucks or on a friends couch. These days he only has a nap once or twice a week but it is usually for a good 2 hours.
My 19 month old will only sleep in his crib. This is inconvenient when we need to go somewhere since he will NOT sleep in his carseat. But he is a great napper when at home in his crib! He sometimes naps in a play yard when at his grandmother's house, but usually ends up crying and then falling asleep on her shoulder. He has her well trained!
when i quit rocking my now 2 year old to sleep, i started letting her nap in my bed. it was something "special" so she was willing and it's just stuck. she also sleeps longer for some reason! but night time is her bed only!
It is so hot over here right now (Cape Town) that we moved the couch outside and we have been having our daily nap out there. A pile of books and a shady spot what could be more perfect!!! http://www.se7en.org.za/2009/12/27/saturday-spot-se7ens-survival-of-the-season-spot
My toddler hasn't had a day sleep since she was 2 (not for my lack of trying). On the odd occasion (twice a year, maybe!) that she does, it is curled up on the couch.
My daughter never napped (but hey, she slept through the night by the time she was 4 weeks old -- from 8 pm, I'd wake her for a feed at 11, and then wake her for a feed at 7:30). The only places she would nap would be in the stroller (took a lot of walks with that kid!) or the car (she's a great traveller!).
My son naps on the sofa, in the corner on a sheepskin. (when he was younger, he too liked to nap in the stroller) Noise doesn't bother him, but were I to try to put him upstairs in his bed, he would wake as soon as I set him down.
I personally believe that kids should be allowed to nap anywhere - as long as it is safe - like they won't roll off and hurt themselves.
it worked well for us because my son would fall asleep anywhere and we didn't have to work around his sleep schedule!!
My 20 month old has slept side ways in the shopping cart seat, head on my purse, since she was one. We get LOTS of comments about that, all positive. However, when I try to move her from the car seat to her crib, she always wakes up - go figure.
At home, as the crib thing was NOT working for naps, I finally sat with her in the recliner until she went to sleep - and she sleeps for a couple of hours there. I can cook or do whatever and still keep an eye on her, so it works out. Do what works... naps are important for toddlers and mommies!
It's so much easier to get my three year old to take a nap if I let her nap on the couch. I think she feels like she's missing out or being punished if I send her to her room to nap. So telling her that she has to have 30 minutes of quiet time on the couch, she's more likely to fall asleep (usually withing 15 minutes).
Not now, as he finally sleeps in his room without much fuss. But when he was younger and resistant to naps, I let him sleep on the sofa. He hated being confined in his crib, but once he switched to a proper bed, he no longer fights being in there.
My toddler fell asleep on her potty last week, leaning against the sofa. Usually though she and her sister & brother will sleep on the floor on their quilt.
Our 2.5 yr old naps most often in our bed. She shares a room with her brother and they don't nap at the same time, so this allows her some time to herself and she always sleeps for at least 3 hours in the afternoon still, so it works for me!
off topic- If anyone knows where I can find those pillows and that throw I would greatly appreciate it. I have been obsessing over this pic for a while now. Love them!
