Last week, our friends took off unexpectedly to Catalina Island (jealous)! Their trip was a great reminder to whittle out some time for ourselves during this fleeting summer. Spontaneity is key when embarking on a last minute vacation, so it helps to make your home "travel ready." To expedite our departure and make packing a breeze, we always keep our place fully stocked with certain essential supplies.
We love knowing that packing an overnight bag or suitcase will be a cinch due to our stocked travel kit. Airplane safe (3.4 ounce) containers are always at the ready for any last minute excursions (a habit we've enjoyed since college). It's best to keep your kit accessible for when you add anything or need to access it for a trip. A drawer near the bathroom or a plastic container in the linen closet are great spots to stash a travel pack. Here is a list of items we like to stock--and don't forget to let us know what's in your kit!
Toiletries (small versions of our shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant and hair product)
Mini case of Q-tips
Contact case
Small container of contact solution
Spare pair of contacts
Face wash
Headphones
Small sewing kit with a few buttons

Shaw's Original Fir...
Yes, sort of. All those little zip-locks of 3oz. bottles are pretty useless except to throw into the grey bus-pan at the airport. It also has an emergency earthquake/tornado/hurricane/
whaever kit!
I also keep dental floss, a toothbrush, and mini-toothpaste tube in my travel kit. Along with a few essential feminine products of course. :) After a trip I ensure that my overnight toiletries bag is stocked for the next journey, and that way I don't have to panic when I'm packing last-minute. Not only do I keep a travel kit, but I have a travel checklist on my computer that I update and print for each trip. It's made packing far less stressful.
I keep my travel bag stocked with stuff that won't go bad/expire. It's annoying to restock every single thing every time we want to go away.
I bought a family-sized toiletry bag just for me so I can carry full-sized bottles, if needed. It has to be checked at the airport, of course, but I'm willing to just keep critical items in my carry-on.
I agree that if I'm checking a bag, my toiletries go into the checked bag. Everything in it can be replaced if needed.
One thing I always carry on is my meds. I carry a one-week supply in my purse, and enough in my checked baggage for my projected trip 1 week, just in case my homecoming is delayed.
My toiletry kit lives in my suitcase. Before each trip I check it to see if it needs restocking. Also in my suitcase are my travel chargers for cell phone and Kindle.
I keep 3 oz bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash in my family sized toiletry bag along with travel size toothpaste, hairspray and extra dental floss in a ziploc bag. There is also a travel toothbrush, hairbrush and claw. This way if I am only bring a carryon I grab that ziploc or if i am traveling by car and bring the big bag, if i forgot to bring something, i will have a small version as well.
Plus I keep a drawer in the bathroom with travel size personal goods making it easy to grab some with heading for a last minute trip. The key is to make sure everything gets refilled at the end of each trip making it ready for the next one.
Any sample of face wash, moisturizer, shampoo, conditioning treatment, etc... that comes in a foil pouch goes directly into the travel stash.
"Gifts" from the dentist also go into the travel stash - mini floss, mini paste, and extra toothbrush.
My toiletries are always essentially ready - just some last minute tweaking is needed.
mdorothy - I agree, an extra set of chargers that live with the suitcase is a wonderful luxury. No worries of forgetting and no drama if left behind.
I have a whole box of random travel size stuff. I tend to go smaller rather than at the 3 oz level, because I do a lot of 1-night work trips and long weekend trips, and 3 oz is actually a lot for most things. Since I avoid checking bags at all costs (no pun intended...I do it mostly because I hate waiting at the carousel), I have to be crafty to fit all my toiletries into the quart size bag. I managed to do it for a week-long trip, though, too. Trick is to find what you can do in a liquid alternative (soap, solid shampoo, dry face cloths, powder foundation...) and pack that separately.
I like the new "travel' size toothpaste that is larger than the typical travel size ones which are too small for anything over a day or two...that's saved me a lot of headaches of trying to decide how much toothpaste I need each time.
I also keep, in the little pocket on the front of my suitcase, a little travel emergency kit, for all those things you don't expect, like a sewing kit, nail file, band aids, lint roller, aspirin, etc. Sounds like a lot, but it's nothing. I've been stuck too many times in remote places needing those random things!
Okay, and the last tip which will REALLY reveal me for the anal retentive freak I am...I bring clorox wipes for hotel rooms. I saw a local news story once about germs in hotel rooms, so I give the major culprit areas (door knobs, remote control, phone receiver) a once-over.
I guess I veered off the topic a bit...
I've never thought of doing this before, but its an excellent idea! Maybe I'll start making one for my bf, since he seems to always be forgetting things. Or actually he just thinks I'm going to pack all of his stuff when I pack mine. Which sometimes I do, but I packed ahead of time last trip (with sample sized containers actually!), so I couldn't pack his stuff. I asked before we left he he packed everything he needed, but of course once we got to our destination he was asking me for his toothbrush and shaving cream!
Christine don't forget to use those Clorox wipes on the plane as well. Those tray tables are disgusting, plus the armrests, window pull, light buttons, and airvent. If you use the bathroom clean the door handle as well. My friends mock me but always ask for one.
I have two bins: a special occasion bin and a "minis" bin. I've been traveling a lot for weddings this summer, so I tend to mix and match between the special occasion and the minis. But I do keep soap, shampoo, razor, toothbrush and toothpaste in the travel bag all the time.
I don't do last minute travel a lot, but I do have a bizarrely large amount of travel supplies. After reading this, I'm relieved to know I'm not as OCD as I thought.
I definitely do this. I don't travel far, but even just a little weekend trip is soooo much easier when all you have to do is pull the "trip bag" out of the closet. I also have a checklist in there so that my husband doesn't arrive at our destination and realize he has no socks.
I always thought everyone did this anyway, since as a kid we were away camping most weekends so we all had separate travel washkits ready all summer and they went in and out of the caravan each weekend. I still definitely always have mine ready.
I love Sitesmitten's idea of a general list in your computer to print each time. I have to re-write my list for each journey and I will always need most of the things I put in the list, so I'm gonna make one of those for my next trip. :-)
