We say this daybed design by Donald Judd is for inspiration only because one built during his lifetime can fetch over $70,000 at auction these days...
Okay, so we're not going to be buying a Judd original anytime soon... but what about making one inspired-by? We think it could be accomplished with simple woodworking tools and know-how. The beds are made of pine 2x lumber and create a freestanding sleeping niche. The design is simple and definitely inspiring to us. The double-sided version you see above was designed by Judd for his children and is held in The Arena at The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

Hey, a GOOD use of knotty pine!
I saw something similar in the living room in a World of Interiors house in South America a few years ago. Big fireplace, lots of white with some red in the room.
That seems like it would be a nice piece of furniture for a studio or loft where there is a need to create a distinct sleep/bedroom area of the room.
lol, the bottom one reminds me of the scene in the movie "It Happened One Night" where they try to create some sort of divider on the bed so they don't have to touch.
i have a studio apartment and would love to have more out-of-towners stay over so a sturdy divider contraption like that would solve my lack of extra bedding! :-)
My son and I went to Marfa last summer. Beautiful, inspiring place. We haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet, but it was filmed in the countryside there.
Judd ( they told us on the tour) didn't like couches - he though that when you've awake you should be alert - so there a lot of straight chairs around - and he thought if you're tired you should take a nap - so all of his studio spaces included a bed.
Greg on Daddytypes.com is working on a Judd daybed-inspired crib. He's having the side made from plexi rods, to give kind of a striped stained-glass effect, from what I can tell. Seems like a good idea. But the real Judd daybed makes me a little uncomfortable - the sides are just too high, I would feel claustrophobic.
