Don't Move It, Get Rid of It

Moving can be a fantastic opportunity to shed some belongings. That old chair you're no longer fond of, the collection of spoons from every state, and that big, old television you promised you'd find another use for can all go some place other than your new home. Here are a few tips for purging before you move.

  • If your unwanted item has a little value left to it, consider selling it on craigslist or our own city-specific Apartment Therapy Classifieds. Photograph the item, write a clear description, set a fair price, and get rid of your old stuff while also adding to the professional movers fund.
  • If you have a little more time, or if you have some collectibles you want to unload before your move, consider eBay.
  • And then there are those things that you'd just be happy to get rid of. That is why the internet gods have blessed us with freecycle.org.
  • If photographing and listing your old junk is more work that you'd like to put into it, consider a local thrift store or charity organization. Boxes of old clothes and small pieces can be dropped off and some thrift stores will pick up larger pieces and collections.
