Dorm DIYs: 10 Ways to Add Personality to Drab College Digs

There are a couple of weeks left until college students move in and classes start — which means there's still time to think about dorm decor. These ten project ideas will help students save money, get set up and make their rooms stylish and homey.
TOP ROW:
1. Ottomans provide extra seating when friends stop by, and are another way to add fun pattern and color to a space. This fabric pouf is from HGTV but you can easily find other patterns on the internet.
2. Rugs add color AND dampen the noise for downstairs neighbors. Sarah Dorsey shows how to make a bold patterned rug using paint and an inexpensive IKEA rug.
3. Nothing is worse than staring at dingy, white walls for nine months. This geometric wall art from Curbly is a colorful and strong antidote.
4. An easy way to distinguish between roommates' cords is to wrap them in washi tape. From HGTV.
5. And while we are talking about washi tape, it also temporarily disguises college-issue furniture, walls, doors and switch plates. At the end of the year, just strip it off and the room is ready for its next occupant. From Crab & Fish.
BOTTOM ROW:
6. Hand print or stencil fabric to use as a lightweight tapestry — fabric is easy to hang on dorm walls, and it covers a lot of blank space. It also makes a nice headboard of sorts. Design Manifest used a wooden paisley printer's block, but it's easy to buy a pre-made stamp or carve your own.
7. Make a one of a kind duvet with this project from Design*Sponge using iron-on transfers.
8. Store stuff out of sight on bookshelves with upcycled shoe boxes, like these basic striped versions from Skona Hem.
9. An easily hideable laundry bag from Making Nice in the Midwest. It might help to have a couple of these hanging on the back of a closet door.
10. It's been circulating the internet for some time, but this storage idea, from Livet Hemma, is still a stylish favorite and pretty easy to pull off with some plywood boxes and binder clips.
