My mother used to place wall paper between the top of the table and the glass top.
Modern-day "lacca povera". I learned this from The Buzz on Antiques: "The art of decorating a furniture surface with paper prints that were cut out and adhered to a prepared and painted surface and then varnished"

these are nice, wouldn't decoupage work the same? ie. is there a specific reason to use wallpaper, or does it matter?

I just did this over the weekend but opted for gift wrap and Mod Podge over wallpaper as an inexpensive alternative!
I have just relegated my Malm drawers from my bedroom to the office. Definitely in need of some DIY improvement! I love the mismatch in picture 5. Thanks for the idea!
