As you can see, the most consistent element to this look is a contrasting throw/blanket which is always included across the bottom of the bed; sometimes all the way across in a rectangular shape, sometimes folded into more of a square and placed on the right...but there is ALWAYS this stripe/block of color.
Other elements of this style: a mix of pillow shapes and sizes (there are rarely just the actual bed pillows), often a monochromatic color story based on tones of the same family of color, a mix of patterns and textures and finally, an embrace of the asymmetrical; the two sides of the bed don't necessarily mirror each other.

Also, in at least the first two images, the fabric used appears to be real flax linen... with its great wicking and drying properties... important, I'd guess, in Italy.
I love the texture of real linen. And what georgeous colors - I especially love #7.
Picture #4 shows exactly how my mother dresses up her bed. Of course, she uses only real linen. Recently she asked me to buy some cheap extra bedcloth from Ikea and I answered: are you nuts? your skin wouldn't survive to ikea materials! As for me, the story is totally different. I'm young and I don't want to spend my time dressing up my bed, so I use duvet covers and every morning I just throw the duvet on my bed, which looks a bit sloppy of course. Maybe with time I'll learn to appreciate a good looking bed!
Only picture 5 looks made up to me. In my humble opinion, the rest look very unorganized. I guess the "just woke up look" is in.
This makes sense to me... when I visited (Southern)Italy last, it would get incredibly hot in the afternoons - everyone would disappear into their home from noon till around four when the temperature started to become a little more bearable. The throws would make sense for a daily siesta, it's not like you'd want to get fully under the covers...
Interesting. My mom just convinced me to buy two different sized throw pillows because I couldn't find two matching green ones. I don't consider myself a symmetry freak, but I don't like it! I want matching!
Anyone know where the bed in the first picture is from?
Anything that works against the trend for layers of pillows 4 or 5 deep, arranged in ruthless symmetry and stretching halfway down the bed, is welcome.
