Some of the most covet-worthy items in our favorite catalogs aren't for sale, like this gorgeous wall of cocktail umbrellas flanking the featured product, a dresser. Thankfully the stylists at Land Of Nod like to share their good ideas and techniques in the "Try This" series on the Honest To Nod blog.
Dane Holweger created the catalog look using drink umbrellas, wire snips and poster putty. It's a brilliant way to add tons of color to the contractor white walls of a rental or to any stretch of drywall in need of some excitement. (In before "omg the duuuuuust posts")
Super cute idea, especially that it is temporary because of the putty. Could do this in a rental or dorm.
Would be cute on a ceiling, too!!
lol secretcrumpet! totally love the idea, but would probably use it as party rather than permanent decor because of....omg the duuuuuuust!
I loved this so much in the LON catalog I pointed it out to my husband, whose immediate reaction was--that would collect so much dust! Oh well, a girl can dream.
Love it.
You could also do it small-scale, like with a large bulletin board, framed as art.
DON'T BE SCARED OF DUST! I'm sure a light feather or Swiffer duster could help it out on occasion without causing too much damage.
Wouldn't these be highly flammable?
@LITTLEMOUSE, I've also seen drink umbrellas hung from the ceiling for party decoration. They would be cute clustered over a bar.
@THE NESTING GAME, I find that swiffers don't really do anything unless you put a little pressure on them. Maybe the dust in my old building tends toward the sticky side?
I bet this would also work if you stuck them on a cheap glass light fixture such as a cheap flushmount mushroom or globe fixture.
Or a lampshade!
I was thinking the same thing. Fire hazard.
Why not do this on a board, then photo it, and hang the photos instead? It would be easier to maintain in the long run,
I like the idea of turning it into a framed photo instead...still fun and cute, avoids the dust/fire hazard issues, gives it a longer lifespan, and turns it into something sophisticated that a kid could appreciate through their teens and college years. But keep in mind that little girl might grow up to love drinks with umbrellas too much on her first spring break trip!
What about sticking them all around a foam ball or two hung from the ceiling? I think that would be lovely. :)

Saw this at an Anthro store like 10 years ago- they had it in a "swoosh" across the wall- it would look great on a smaller scale, which would minimize.... omg the duuuuuuust
Back when HGTV had a show called 'That's Clever', the show featured a crafter who adorned a lamp shade with drink umbrellas. It was very cute.
But... what is Barbie going to use to protect her delicate vinyl skin from the sun?
You could use a hairdryer on it to dust it!
I don't care for it at all, myself, but I do like the vision of blowdrying all the little umbrellas clean.
my son would rip those all down in 3 minutes.
Really like the pops of color and the cuteness of it all but I'm on the same band wagon as the others regarding the dust. I do really like "JEFFRED" idea of taking a photo of it and making it sort of wall paper.
Either way, it's super cute but I would hate to have to clean it. Even with a hair dryer or Swifter.
