With people scaling back their living quarters in this new economy, many rooms need to have several functions in order to fulfill the spatial needs of apartment dwellers. We've seen a resurgence in the often-overlooked daybed.
There are many fresh designs out there that don't look like the bastard children of sofas and beds, but rather stylish pieces of furniture on their own. For those lucky enough to have a combination office, studio, guest room, gym, closet, or any number of these functions, a daybed can provide the necessary lounging and sleeping areas in one footprint. And because daybeds are often lower to the ground than regular beds, they work well for TV-viewing and feel like modern platform beds when used for sleeping.

I still don't know the function for daybeds.
Are you suppose to take a afternoon nap in there?? Since I don't or since most people I know don't or don't have time to, I assume I don't need one..lol
I have one as my main couch in my living room. In a small space, it allows me to have a place for a guest to sleep, while not taking up the purpose of a guest bed at all times.
um...you don't know the function of a daybed?
Even after this intro?:
"With people scaling back their living quarters in this new economy, many rooms need to have several functions in order to fulfill the spatial needs of apartment dwellers"
hello?
I bought a daybed recently in order to solve the problem of additional seating and lounging in the livingroom without the visual clutter of yet another sofa. It's also next to a set of windows, so its sleek, low-profile silhouette doesn't block the windows.
Love it. Great pics and great ideas for day-beds.
would love to see some ideas for diy daybeads...
I like the idea of a daybed for a guest room. I wish more daybeds came with trundle beds underneath though. That way if you have guests you can pull it out and use it, when you don't, you have extra space if you use the room of other functions.
I have an L-shaped banquette made from one regular-sized twin mattress and one extra-long twin as my living room couch.. Had it built w/ 8" wide purpleheart wood topped arms to serve as "end tables" in a small space...hold lamps, drinks, books etc. And it's hinged for storage underneath the mattresses. I think the key to a successful daybed for seating purposes is dense foam angled back cushions with throw pillows in front of them to take up the extra width of the mattress. Throw pillows alone are not supportive enough for comfort.
I have two IKEA black wood daybeds in the livingroom instead of couches. We covered the mattresses in black upholstery, and added a million colorful throw pillows. They are great for lounging on, since my back hurts when I sit in the traditional feet-on-the-floor, shoulders-above-butt position, they are great for lounging on. And, best yet, they have a TON of drawer space underneath. I have an a printer/scanner/copier/fax in one of them- I just roll out the drawer whenever I need to use it. It's just a nice bonus that guests can sleep on it if they come to town (or I can sleep there if I'm being snoring too much and my wife wants to sleep ;) )
Over my 40-year adult life, I have spent a lot of money trying to use daybeds. I have failed. They are uncomfortable to sit on. It'd be great if they could make cot sized, rather than twin sized. The standard twin size are just too deep for sitting and I'm not much of a lounger.
Daybed don't work so well as sofas, I think, but for reclining/napping, they are great.
I did some online shopping yesterday and there are cot sized daybeds available with either trundles or storage. Found only one nice looking one. Will probably order one for trial. Nice wood for under $800. That's moderate sofa priced, so if it works to transform a guestroom into a TV room it will be a good investment.
Daybed. Schmaybed. Where does one get that amazing shaggy pouf in the center of that photograph? Must have!! Thanks in advance for any assistance; am swimming through the web and drowning on finding one.
