Nick Dine, son of the painter, and Richard Shemtov were young designers who started this huge, airy modern store and company in 1996 and had firmly established themselves in the design world by 2000. While Mr. Dine also does interiors and residences for a living, one imagines that Dune is their showcase: the place where they show off and test their best ideas.

The style here is totally modern contemporary, playful and colorful. Everything is made to order, and fabric choices are endless. We've heard a few complaints regarding their customer service, but have also known people who had good experiences.

Couches start at $2700 (with fabric) and armchairs at $1800 (with fabric). We recommend the Electrode Shelving (pictured here) which is made of powder coated steel, runs $225 per unit and comes in 1,000 colors.

Dune also has a showroom in ABC Home and Carpet called Dune Living which would definitely be worth checking out.
