Dwell on Design show here in LA where Dwell Media and Autodesk are demoing a new online home design tool which should help ease the challenges of renovating and redecorating around the home...and at a very nice price: free! The Dwell Design Desk is an online design planning tool which offers customizable drag-and-drop room layout features, with up to 10,000 Dwell-approved products to add into your virtual dream space, all viewable as both 2D plans and as a 3D model.
No, this isn't an image from Dwell Design Desk...just a photo from Unhappy Hipsters which looks similar in angle to a 3D rendering. We think you'll be anything but unhappy (though perhaps still a hipster) with Dwell Design Desk's results though. Once completed, the online plans created with Dwell Design Desk can be saved and accessed by friends and family to review, collaborate and hopefully approve before you open up your wallet. We gave the software a try and found it fairly easy to navigate, with a good amount of options in both architectural detailing, furnishings and accessory items (offering even a selection of flat panel televisions of various sizes) and liked the above-average in aesthetics design elements available compared to most space-planning software, where most often the furnishings feel overly generic (users will also be able to access/integrate product collections from the likes of FLOR, Dacor, Kohler, Sherwin Williams and Corian for surface solutions). Dwell definitely put their stamp on the decor items, though one could argue their brand of interiors are often marked by a more austere (though curated) interior finish, so be light with those furnishings elements for the complete Dwell effect. Individual pieces can be further customized in size and colour via an options menu, which further improves you'll finish up plans that looks more like your dream and less like a JC Penny catalog page from 1988. After finishing your 2D layout, a simple button push converts your room plans into a 3D model, which hopefully can help convince your better half you definitely need to repaint, get new window coverings and purchase that media cabinet that will tie the room decor together! Give the Dwell Design Desk online tool a try and share your project links below, if you're able and willing to give a peek into your design aspirations!
