DWELL just announced that they've completed the shakeup of their editorial team by naming Amanda Dameron to fill the leadership role that Sam Grawe left last summer. Considered a "small, independent magazine" by the publishing world, even though it's big in the design world, the real big shift is that Dameron will be working from New York City, not San Francisco. What does it mean that West Coast born DWELL will be run from New York? Who knows exactly, but it seems that if you want to be taken seriously, you've got to be plugged into the Big Apple. I wish her all the best. Due to the economy, I have seriously cut back on my magazine subscriptions but Dwell is one of the few I have kept. That says something about it's quality!
Bring back Domino :(
I, too, have kept my subscription. Being in SF, DWELL strikes a chord. Hoping things will be for the better.
YES! PLEASE BRING BACK DOMINO.
I canceled Dwell recently. It's become editorially tiresome and visually static. I understand that a magazine needs a "look" but it's become a society page for a certain type of rich, earnest liberal. The homes are uniformly depressing--just the same lockstep, "edgy" architecture over and over again, filled with unattractive piles of possessions that are supposed to prove their owners' intellectual and design cred. How is this different from an overdecorated Upper East Side townhouse packed with designer furniture? In the last year or two, my heart would actually sink when I saw it in the mailbox. There is no joy in that publication anymore.
I know NYC is supposed to be the center of the design universe but I hate that Dwell is doing this move. I remember when the NYTimes discovered the trend of "duvets" years after they were commonplace on the West Coast. And wine and coffee? People? Oh, and fresh locally grown veggies? The Eames?
Maybe they will finally ease up on having an Eames chair in every single photo. I understand it is classic design, but you would think it was the only one that MCM would ever consider in their house.
I meant to say that MCM owners
