The difference between a duvet and a comforter set?
so so so so awesome. i've been waiting to find a duvet i actually like at the right price... these are perfect.... can't wait. :)
What about thread counts? Most of Targets lines are about 200 -250. That is not nice. Otherwise, I anticipate this will sell like crazy.
Anyone have an idea of when this is due to launch?
A comforter set means you get the comforter with the set and the comforter is in that pattern. A duvet set means you get a duvet cover in the pattern to go over a comforter you already own.
love the perch set! wonder if my husband would feel the love too...
yanners - The Baby line is due out at the end of the month, while the rest of the Home collection should be in stores late February. I read somewhere that the furniture will only be available online.
The Baby Collection launches this month. Check it out on OhDeeDoh. The Home Collection comes out in February!
I got burned on the Swell bedding at Target (big time) so I'm going to pass...but I kinda like the throw pillows.
I wish the sheets were more interesting. It's always hard to find good patterned sheets.
Why must the quality be so bad? I keep trying to buy bedding at Target and it is cheap and scatchy everytime. Makes me sad...
are they doing the peonie pattern in a duvet set?
i'm kind of not impressed. it's like they saved their old design rejects for target.
These just look cheap to me. Too bad.
What is everyone talking about? These all look gorgeous and well-designed to me!
This reminds me of some people I know who don't trust anything without an exorbitant price sticker. Sad.
And I think I read somewhere that these duvets and sheets will be 300 thread count, which I believe is close to their non-Target brand counts. I could be mistaken.
It's not like Dwell manufactured them, but they would have had to approve the quality based on whomever the licensee/manufacturer is that Target asked them to use. That said, I had high hopes for the Swell stuff...and the colors ran and the fabric shrunk (note: it wasn't on a high setting) in the dryer and pill'd up badly. It's likely the same manufacturer (assumption on my part) so I wouldn't hold out hope...
Dwell always does very cool designs. I wonder what the price points will be at Target compared to the regular Dwell line. Also, is the quality really comparable?
My favorite Dwell bedding is still the Chinoiserie set:
http://dwellshop.com/b2c/ecom/ecomEnduser/default/default.aspx
i agree this looks sort of cheap and like something from the dwell reject pile. maybe i'm getting jaded, but this aesthetic is just getting tired to me.
I think it's important to remember who the key audience is. It's people who can't typically afford the luxury of Dwell bedding. Keeping that in mind, the quality might be a little less then what is expected from Dwell as this line was designed for Target customers. I like Target and think their designer lines are a great way to introduce more expensive brands/ designers to the mainstream... and for those of us who enjoy these expensive items, it gives us the opportunity to have them in our homes (maybe not the high quality that is normally expected). When I go to Target, I don't expect Restoration Hardware quality... it doesn't matter who's name is on the item. It's still Target.
In a way, this is really nothing new.
Dwell has been selling lower quality products to Wal Mart (and other discount stores) for some time now. They recycle and revamp their old designs and as far as I know they have even knocked-off their competitors and sold those designs to Wal Mart & other big box stores: http://www.designspacenyc.com
This is just a deal where they get to attach their names to some of the lower quality merchandise they sell. I think actually attaching their name to these products at Target will only serve to hurt their brand in the long run. They probably have $$$ signs in their eyes right now and as such may not realize that this type of license only serves to cheapen a brand. The quality at Target really is inferior and the truth of the matter is that you usually get what you pay for.
Eeew, to sleep on someone's old sheets and blankets from a thrift store...YUCK!
And oh the people that love to say "I only sleep on 1.5 million thread count dahhhling. Ick!
Anyway. If you like em, get em. If you don't, leave em. Simple.
orangejuice - you're sleeping on sheets & blankets (and pillows) that have been slept and drooled on by oodles of different people when you stay in a hotel. What's the difference?
I totally agree about the vintage---with the exception of pillows, I only buy new ones of those. At least if I buy at thrift and bring it home I can sanitize it to my liking and if I have a problem with it I can toss out a few bucks instead of half a days pay. That said, I'll throw my vote in for Target goods with a caveat; I always buy for quality no matter whose name is on the package. If the quality isn't there I don't buy, simple. I purchased some Thomas O'Brien sheets at Target in a wonderful brown floral pattern and they were the softest, smoothest most comfortable sheets I owned.( I had to leave them when I moved and I'd re-purchase except they don't come in a size to fit my double bed now.)
I just wish we had Target in Canada, you guys are all so lucky...I may have to do a little "cross-border shopping" as we call it here.
I am always amazed at how the price differential between comforters and duvets is almost nominal; it makes the comforter set a better value every time. I would gladly pay the extra $10 to have a better tailored look and not have to hassle with peeling/replacing covers on laundry day.
I am not impressed at all with the quality of the DwellStudio flagship brand merchandise (which is outrageously overpriced for what it is), so I am going to have guarded expectations about this. Still, I am really digging the design of the Peony and Regency ensembles...
I heart Tarjay!
In reponse to kellylc -- I can't speak for everyone here, but I don't buy anything with an exorbinant price tag, and I don't have higher reverence for expensive things. I would rather spend the same amount of money on a plain but nicely made sheet set than a sheet set with the Dwell name on it that looks, to me, cheap and post-trendy. I don't like the design, but that probably has more to do with my personal aesthetic than anything else, and it doesn't mean I'm 'right'. To each their own.
The line is set to launch on January 28, according to The New York Times yesterday.

In response to hejiranyc -- I look at the fact that duvets are only $10 cheaper than like-patterned comforters as indicative of the quality of the comforter in question: it's the same as the duvet on the outside, with $10 worth of polyfill on the inside.
Give me a duvet any day -- they help my beloved down comforters last years and years, while adapting to different rooms and decors along the way.
I like the Perch, Baroque, but especially the Modern Border. It's not a style I usually like, but the crisp cleanness looks so lovely... I might have to spend the $70...
aweekinparis--
I most certainly do have a problem with second hand furniture of the fabric variety. It gives me goosebumps just to think about sitting or touching a sofa that is used and not THOROUGHLY cleaned and whose origins and previous owners are questionable. Personally I would not buy a used sofa that is upholstered in fabric. I have a friend who loves getting his furniture from thrift stores and he has 2 old sofas that me and my boyfriend refuse to sit on when we visit because he has NEVER had them cleaned. He looked at me like I was crazy when I proposed that he have Stanley Steamer come out. LOL.
I don't like used personal things like sheets, upholstered, clothes, etc. I know there will be lots of naysayers but it's a personal taste.
I'm willing to admit that I have a lot of double standards when it comes to the issue. I will but a used table, lamp, etc.
I love Target and I like Dwell, but I'm not liking these. Very drab and cheap-looking. I do like the striped sheets, though.
Hmm. I was excited about Dwell expanding their market, but I'm not loving these colors or patterns. Disappointing.
I just looked up Dwell Studios bedding since I had never heard of it before. Their "real" bedding is way tackier than Target.
I am getting sick of this aesthetic, too. I'm glad I didn't fall for it. I almost did with their Chinoserie pattern. And orange juice may be a germaphobe. Ever ride a train or airplane? Do you stand during flights?
The cotton seems to have a sheen in the photos, so I am guessing that the thread count might be at least 300?
and I'm sorry, I like the Dwell for Target Baroque over the similar Dwell Talon design.
I remember hearing about the Swell bedding, and how pill-y and low quality it was! but - this may not be the same vendor, as the Big box retailers make all vendors (like my employer) compete in a sort of auction for the projects. I have a feeling Dwell is taking a huge role in the production or at least the production quality of the Target Line. I do also wonder if this is going to hurt their boutique line. (Outside of Isaac and Mossimo, Target never seems to keep Designers for long). But - isn't Dwell doing real linen and such for top of their boutique bed and dining/kitchen lines?
Target doesn't intend to keep most designers for long. They're one-time deals meant to be limited editions.
I bought the Swell Stripe bedding back in the day, and I still use it. No problems with it except the ones you'd expect of any other sateen sheets in that thread count (feels similar to some 270s I have). I've heard that the sheets that bled and faded were the darker-colored lines.
I've only seen one Dwell set I can recall liking. (a higher-end version of Perch, perhaps -- but aren't birds played out as a motif?) The others look cheap and loud to me: I think we'll find them unusually embarrassing in 10 years. But I've mentioned here that I don't like Adler much aside from his ceramics, and this is very Adler-inspired.
I'm also always bemused when ppl differentiate between "comforter" and "duvet" -- a duvet IS a comforter. What some ppl are calling a "duvet" is actually a duvet cover. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duvet
I'm definitely underwhelmed by the choices. The only pattern I even remotely like is Perch and I'm not sure if I like it enough to buy it. It also only seems to be available as a comforter and I prefer a duvet.
I agree that the Dwell Targhetto sheets are not great. Dwell in general needs to revamp. They have been doing the same thing for years. Garnet Hill had these type of designs a couple of years before Dwell started their business. It was a small world and the person doing the Garnet Hill stuff was friendly with the Dwell-ers. Anyway, as others have mentioned- it has run from KWID to Jonathan Adler to West Elm and beyond. It is over.
The coolest item that I ever purchased at Target was the "online only" Art Miami limited edition towels. They are the biggest towels ever and super soft. I actually love the Thomas O'Brien towels at as well- they are the bargain of the century.

I personally only like all white bedding (with maybe a small piping). So these would be out of the question. I also think that some home items are worth spending your money. Linen is such a thing. I prefer buying something expensive that I know will last for decades. I could maybe buy a cheap lamp or even a cheap pillow for decoration. All white will never go out of style and is very easy to wash. What I look for is 100% egyptian cotton and percale (over 200 threads). I don't understand why people say that 200 is bad. 200 is consider luxury in the industry. But it also depends on the cotton. The brand that I prefer is Frette.
I have the baroque duvet set with the grey and yellow throw pillow and I am at a loss as to what color to paint my walls. Anybody have any ideas?
I recently bought some (solid color) 400 thread count, easy-care, extra deep sheets at Target, and I have been quite pleased with them. The set cost about $50 if I remember right. The old sheets that went to the local thrift shop were the next step down the line and they did not wear well. I conclude that Target is fine if you keep to the top of the line.

Yuck!! Too jarring, too geometric, too Hollywood Regency. Not my cup of tea, no matter who designed it or what the price tag is.
I worked at Target for two years. I wanted the one with the birds pictured at the top soooo bad. Unfortuantely, working at Target doesn't let you afford many Target items..haha.
Speaking from personal experience, I have the Perch bedding set from Target and I love it. It's very comfortable, and I thought it was the best looking out of all the Dwell bedding sets.
However, I'm not sure I would buy the comforter again. Once it gets wet, (for example, a dog pees on it like what happened to me) the dyes bleed. And while you can wash it, it only makes things worse. Its really big, and difficult to get completely dry. And once it is dried, its very wrinkled--even after I shake it and try to smooth it out!
I also bought the perch set, great for a summer change for a lighter comforter.
I'm back to my feather cover and duvet- I think it will make for nice bedding for the guest room!
Decent quality, good price, and the print was too pretty to pass up!
Just another reason I adore Target!! Dwell Home keep that stock coming!! Look @ this gorgeous bedding line. FANTASTIC!! I own two Dwell bedding sets from Target. My favorite is the one listed above on the front page of this posting with the birds in shades of brown. I love everything about it starting from the pattern design to sateen sheen to the cloud like feel right down velvety touch!! At these great prices, you can bet I'd be added another set or two to my spring fling collection!!
