We've got a NEWS FLASH for appliance designers everywhere: Before you go crazy adding super-crazy energy-saving features like self-kerplunkdinators and whoosywhatsing generators, make sure you've covered the easy stuff. One simple feature on this Kenwood toaster is proven to cut your energy use by 50 percent—so we're just left wondering why it hasn't been a feature on every toaster ever.

This energy-efficient Kenwood toaster can toast two slices of bread to a lovely golden brown—not that revolutionary, we admit. But if you only want to toast one slice, it will only power one slot—cutting your one-slice-toasting-related energy consumption by 50 percent!

It's got all of the important features you're looking for in a toaster—a removable crumb tray, variable width slots, a peek-and-view window and built-in cord storage—but with the added extra bonus of independently functioning toaster slots, so you only use power when and where you need it.

We're not suggesting that you need to run out and get one rightnow. It's not like the toaster is the biggest power-guzzler in the house, or even the kitchen. Plus, for now, it only seems to be available in the UK. But we're loving the idea that manufacturers are being smart and making their products smart, too—even if it does seem to be a little late on the innovation!
