What is the advantage of SMALL? The advantages of living in a small (ok, tiny) home are many. For one, the limited space enforces strict limits on consumption, forcing us to constantly evaluate our possessions and edit them down to only those which truly bring us happiness to own....
What is the advantage of SMALL? CONT'D
Additionally, it encourages a Tetris-Level-20 type of creativity, constantly presenting logistical challenges to solve - who needs Sudoku when you've got two people in a 364 sq ft cubby hole without a single closet! The results of these exercises in utmost cleverness are also always deeply personal - we live in no cookie-cutter apartment, but in one which feels distinctly, blissfully ours.
What's your favorite resource for your home?
Our favorite resource for all things awesome are the sale bins at fancy, expensive stores. We've found gorgeous antique Indian sari fabric pieces 40' by 180' with just a tiny blemish on sale at ABC Carpet & Home for less than $30. There are deals to be found everywhere, so go ahead, walk into the finest stores, and head straight for the red-tag bins - we'll see you there!
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?
Our favorite elements are the little hacks - byproducts of limited space and a single-digit budget. The living room is full of things obtained on sale and re-purposed. Fancy placemats from Z Gallerie and Pier1 are used as bookshelf curtains; fabric shower curtains from Target have been sewn as pretty covers onto the cheap but unfortunately-upholstered futon set; art paper bought in bulk from Kate's Paperie utilized as a cost-saving substitute for wallpaper.
