What is the advantage of SMALL? I love that I do not have a mansion full of possessions that are purely decorative and are not a reflection of me and my lifestyle...

What's your favorite resource for your home?
Traveling the world and collecting many amazing artifacts. I started furnishing my apartment on a budget, and went to IKEA and found some amazing pieces made of solid oak. The wood grain has so much character, and gives beautiful warmth to my home.
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?
My travel treasures I collect from all over the world. I love that my apartment tells a story all my own, each object is a memory of an amazing journey.

White Enamel Flatwa...
The first picture is very helpful for judging the apartment and shows the entrants design sense. The second one...not so much.
Absolutely lovely! You've captured exactly the sort of look I'm shooting for. And I love/envy the architectural detailing on the walls.
There's something very beautiful, elegant, and restful about this space. Not sure I would have chosen yellow for the kitchen, but that's just me. I voted Super-Cool just because it makes me feel at home.
oh the tranquility (and class)! a true sanctuary
I love the shelving unit in the living room area. Where was that purchased?
Thanks!
Too many vases and knick knacks in the living room.
A Cure graduate! Hooray!
Beautiful- despite having more knick knacks than is deemed fashionable these days! Nice to see something warm and lived in with a classic style that isn't too much of a slave to the latest trends.
Surrounding your self with things you love for a 'lived in feel' is one thing, but amassing mass produced knick knacks just to fill a space is quite another. It seems that most of the clutter here fall into the second category.
I would have loved to see the dining area and the bedroom. The living room is lovely!
Lynne, please don't let the comments about your 'knick knacks' affect you. You have lovely items and it's obvious that you have chosen to surround yourself with that which mean a lot to you. You have a soothing and comforting home!
Cosy and comfortable. I like the yellow kitchen. You have beautiful things and they are displayed well.
The living room is one of the best I've seen, very cool!
lynne, wow. lovely apartment. thank you for this entry.
the living room is soothing. i just want to sit in that chair near the lovely floor-stand silk lantern and sit in filtered light at dusk over a cup of tea [i don't drink, or it would be wine]. the roman shades filter light nicely, too. love the colours.
then, surprise--a sunny kitchen, well ordered and loved.
your bathroom is ready for guests, again in a sanctuary colour.
landing strip--sigh. if only my apartment were so organized.
go get a case of wine and invite people over to discuss a good book. you'll heal them.
Beautiful home. I love how you have all your objects displayed. It looks elegant and simple and not overdone. I'm jealous of all the lovely architechural detailing you have in the living room. My living room is a similar layout and size, but with not nearly as much charm as your place.
Your bathroom is so pretty!
Phaedrus, please.
Looks very spacious for the UWS! Agree that seeing the bedroom would have been a plus. Nice apartment.
Where did you get that black (metal?) stand in your bathroom? I noticed it next to the white piece of furniture.
Thanks!
Its nice, but it seems that the layout in the living room is awkward with that console jutting out into the middle of the room...
...and where's a pic of your bedroom?
Lovely space, especially the first photo. I'm not a fan (understatement) of open-storage wall units, but you've done a great job making a comfortable stylish home.
Love it! I think your living room is charming, and a great use of a limited space. Like the bathroom, too. My only criticism is that I think the yellow in the kitchen could be softer, but that's personal preference.
I absolutely LOVE your shower curtain! It is exactly what I am looking for for my bathroom! Can you please tell me where you got it??!!
I adore it. Kudos on the fantastic solution to your windows. How did you append the picture frame to the security gate?
I have the identical window lay-out and have found it very challenging to deal with. The blinds interrupted by pictures make the room seem wider. I'm so envious! I sure wish I'd had that idea!
What would you do if you had to have curtains?
Wow! The apartment looks sooooo comfortable! Great job! And you are very lucky to have so many windows in NYC! [I live on the UWS and wish I had your windows, particularly in the bathroom - that's a bonus!). Enjoy your home! - Dale
P.S. I love the green crueset dutch oven on the fridge in the kitchen - it adds a great splash of unexpected color in the serene environment and if you can find a way to further display it, why not! It's like a cool piece of art!
I immediately just want to curl up on your sofa with a blanket and a good movie. I love it.
I really like this apartment. It's looks very comfortable and welcoming! I like the "knickknacks" in the living room....although I wouldn't catagorize it that way, just meaningful things to the owner and I find it interesting. I would love to live in that home! Very lovely!
It is obvious that you live and love. I admire anyone who can fill their space with "objets" that tell their story. Your living room looks like a great place to enjoy a glass of red and a well told tale.
I really like the colors in the kitchen and the bathroom the most. The window shades and the furniture in the living room look great, too, though.
Very nice apartment. I also travel internationally and love to collect mementos (knick-knacks and such) of the places I've been and the people I've met. I can tell that your artifacts give you pleasure in remembering, as mine do for me. And I really am not concerned if someone else doesn't like it - it makes me happy!!
I'm of two minds - One hand I think momentos of travels are perfectly fine - little emotional markers of past memories. On the other hand I'm a big fan of living in the present - which means eschewing those emotional markers to focus on today, and pare down to what is really necessary. I would agree that the place is a little knick-knacky and thats not entirely personal taste kicking in. Why not bring back useful objects - textiles to be hung or used as blankets, vessels & boxes etc.
Hello everyone, thanks for the lovely comments.
To answer a few questions, the shelving is the Journalist system form Ikea and the shower curtain is from Kohl's. These were bought a few years ago, so I do not know if they would still have them in stock. The Bathroom stand is from a small flea market shop in PA.
I know some think I have too many things, but to me these things are beloved treasures I have picked up from my various travels. I enjoy looking at them every day, and I love the fond memories they hold. To me they make my small apartment all my own, and to quote lynnelise1, they make me happy.
i love how you kept the backdrop of you home neutral which focuses on whats important to you-your memories from around the world. Also, the place looks organized and is catered well to your needs. Good for you Lynne.
