Name: R&R Ranch
Location: Durham, NC
Type of Home: Midcentury Modern Split-Level Ranch
What inspired you to use color? I was inspired to use color in our home because when we bought it, the house was 'builder's beige' from head to toe...the walls, the trim, and the carpet. Slowly but surely, we have brought the house back to life with color.
Color Tip: don't be afraid...just try it
Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------
Welcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...
1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide
The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.
2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop
Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.
Best, Maxwell

Beautiful colors! I love it.
Great! And I like that there is, in fact, some beige in the house.
I love the wall colors and vintage finds...
...but why is all the upholstery in the Living Room beige?
very beautiful, i really like the whole feel of the space. i have the same bedspread (entry SW #11), it's a poplar print that I see on many annoying reality shows - but i love it! and i esp. luv how you styled it in your room with the blue/white/beige pillows. Great place overall :)
Now I have to ask, where is the bedspread from? I've never seen it before and it is lovely!
LOVE this!!!. i looove the colors.
I love the bold use of color in this home. It walks the balance of feeling modern, but the retro furnishings give it that atomic ranch home feel. The ascetics are very clean-lined and zen-like.
Definitely a contender! Really love all the colors you used here. They really work well together. And I'm with the other posters here....that bedspread is lovely....I know I've seen it before, but I can't remember where...can u let me know where you got it?
susy8track and Snowiye: beadspread is from ikea!
I knew I'd seen it somewhere before! Thanks for the info!
I love this one. I am going to steal some of your great ideas for my own bedroom reno. Beautiful home!
You have coordinated the colors beautifully to create a warm, inviting and modern space. Good job!
Great colors in your living room. I'd love to have seen the bedroom in natural light but it looks very well designed, too.
I am very impressed, lots of colors and variety usually don't pull together, but you really made it work. Also, your place has the magazine wonderful look, but if I inspect it (and I always do) for a reality check. . . your place totally passes. It looks livable, easy, and very comfy cozy. Good job on all counts!
I love that every room appears to have at least two differently colored walls -- very brave, and very well-executed.
This is top notch, I'll root for the home team. GO R & R!
What a vibrant, inspiring use of colour! Love the kangaroo artwork too (of course!)
very cool, great use of color!
The apple green/brown combination in the second pic has always been a favorite of mine, you've done it justice as well as every other room here! And I second the kangaroo, every bedroom should have one!
I don't even know what that means. 8^p
I love the colors in all the rooms. The dining area is really cool and modern. The living room is beautiful and just seems to come to life with color and looks so lived-in - like something you would see in a magazine. The combination of color and design are definitely a winner for me!
I think you should be the winner... this is so warm & cozy.. and great use of color!
Although it is colorful and bright it doesn't look lived in. I don't see any thing that lets me think people live in this place. Maybe it is too graphically ascetic for my taste. Something perhaps a builder put together as a show house.
Wow. Beautiful colors, beautiful home.
Really, really great use of color! I think you deserve the win. And ousting the carpet was a good choice. Oh, and nice artwork.
Hi click212,
Oh it is DEFINITELY lived in! Been there, done that, LOVED it! I can understand why you might think that though. It's neat and clean and uncluttered, but VERY comfortable. R&R are good friends of mine and are gracious hosts to me and our friends. Whether lying on the couch leafing through a copy of Dwell, sipping a Pimm's, taking a break from the pool, watching a thunderstorm in the dark, watching the debates, or taking advantage of the guest bedroom for a nap or a good night's sleep, it's ALWAYS comfy. And this is EXACTLY how it looks - all the time. R is a genious. And a GREAT photographer. Bravo!
Unique and talented use of color. I hope we get to see more.
Gorgeous, vivid colors! Love it. I'm a fan of the chocolate brown wall paired with the green wall in the den/living room. (My LR walls are Sherwood Green and my DR is Sweet Georgia Brown).
I really dig the lamp shade against the green wall. I love horticultural-inspired accessories.
The pictures are beautiful - magazine quality.
Wonderful work.
Your one of my favorite houses in the competition!
before seeing r&r's pad, i thought color was an insult to minimalism - the color in this space brings life and energy to a ranch that might otherwise risk being lost to that which was uninspiring in that age of design.
hands down my favorite so far. this is what my home aspires to!
Nice! Clearly Durham is rockin' the colors this year. Is it something in the water?
Glad to see other ATers in the Triangle! Truly one of the best homes in competition this year!
Wow, looks to me like R&R have been able to use color as a "structural" element of their design not mearly a decorative accessory. Color, form and function are a synergistic whole: Ergo no sensory overload, no feeling of clutter or "staging". The whole look and feel is Pollack does Zen. Bravo!
Wow, someone who knows how to make modern and contemporary warm! This looks to me like a really professional layout in a top design magazine, or a fancy catalogue. Not even Design Within Reach can make the rooms look this good. R & R are brilliant, and I want to be invited over!
Very nice cohesive use of color. There is orange, blue and green throughout the house creating a nice flow of energy and visual union. I like how both furniture and decorative objects are purposefully placed creating an inviting space without the fussiness of still-life like arrangements. A refreshing example of a mid-century modern home updated while preserving the integrity of the original design and period. Awesome!
I love the wall coloring -- very bold, yet creates the warmth of home. Quite beautiful!
Ooh! I like!
I also like how the lamp cables aren't dangling behind the open bookshelf.
Love to cork flooring! Eco and rich and warm color. I
The colors in this home are so adventurous! You obviously have great style and ability - not only in paint selection, but in decor. Bravo!
I'm very impressed; there are a lot of colours in this home but they all work so well together and are lovely and rich. It's a delight to look at!
This is truly fabulous! R&R's use of bold, exciting colors come together perfectly in this home. I can imagine myself enjoying a cocktail with friends, happy conversation, and generally unwinding from the daily grind, anywhere in this house. The "reaction to builder's beige" is perfect - that is, the exact antithesis of the beige bomb method of room painting. Not to mention these wonderful colors, the tasteful and interesting decorating style, and inviting feel are all contained within a bygone era's happy example of what is the opposite of the vinyl-covered, mass-produced box of today.
I hope to see the R&R Ranch WIN, for sure!!
Absolutely love the color scheme. I recently read a book called CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER WITH FENG SHUI by Karen Kingston. The owners of this house obviously understand the concept of less is more and surrounding yourself with beautiful items that you love. I could feel my energy balancing out just by looking at these photos. The unique colors make the R&R Ranch my top choice.
I have always loved color and have a scrapbook full of ideas for using different colors without making my space look too "over the top" or weird. This house has given me many good ideas and just the right push I needed to move forward and take some risks. I really like the use of bold colors and lighting to accentuate the color schemes. Looks warm and happy without being too sterile as some homes strike me. Thanks for the inspiration! Can I put you on speed dial??
Love the colors and clean layout, truly inspiring. I plan on using some of these ideas in my home....great work!
i just had to say again, this is my favorite entry in the whole contest!
Excellent use of warm tones and surfaces to bring a richness and a inviting texture to modern lines! A triumph!
Wow! Absolutely amazing color flow. Gotta love the orange!
Wonderfuly done! Your the best!
Really enjoy the mix of colors and creativity. Great job!
I love the clean lines of the modern furniture. It allows for a bold and brave mixing of different colors and textures. I think it's beautiful and fresh-looking.
this home is indeed lived-in, and warm and beautiful. r&R have done a wonderful job of putting their everyday use objects in storage spaces -- what is beautiful about this home is the open space, the lack of clutter, and the emphasis on the modern design and eye-popping color. Your art work is personalized, and your use of orange really warms the space.
What a wonderful use of color...and the rooms flow together beautifully! You've taken some clever risks and are clearly inspiring others. Well done!
I love the use of greens and browns in the living room -- very warm and relaxing, and it refers to the verdant outdoors, but in a very modern way. classy!
Hi everyone...this is Robert of R&R Ranch here. Thanks for all of your comments (positive and critical). I entered this contest without much forethought and I have been honored by the feedback provided.
I am definitely disappointed that I did not make it through tonight, especially since my opponent overcame a 30 vote deficit in the last 45 minutes of voting (between 2:15 and 2:40 am EDT...odd to anyone else)?
In any event, good luck to all. My contest days are over, unless design professionals are judges in the future.
Robert of R&R
R&R-
We wanted to let you guys know that when the competition started a couple days ago and we were paired up with your house, we had dubbed you all "our toughest competition yet". We watched throughout the day as you stayed consecutively 30-50 points ahead of us. I must have rallied the entire town of Athens to vote for us! I admit that during the day when I knew people were voting for us, I thought, "this competition must be rigged" because it seemed that every time our vote went up one, yours went up 3 or 4. It's easier to get suspicious in a contest! When we got ready for bed that night, we checked in one more time to see where we stood and you were still leading us 40 points (not surprisingly, your house is the definition of Fall Colors) and we went to bed totally bummed out. When I woke up to vote for the next round and saw that we had won, we couldn't believe it (as I'm sure you couldn't either). If some kind of sketchy voting is occurring in this competition, it happened in the final minutes that night and was certainly not on our end. I can't say that I'm sorry that we won that round, but I am sorry if anyone feels that it was rigged. If it was, then you were certainly cheated. Again, your home had it all, and was certainly the toughest competition we had.
Damien and Rachel
Thanks for your comments, Damien and Rachel, they are nice to read. I was on the west coast and could watch the voting to the end (yes, perhaps a little OCD) and watched in amazement that you all got 40 votes in about ten minutes (sort of like watching my retirement account disappear).
Because of this somewhat strange voting so late in the night, I've submitted a suggestion to the organizers to consider having a concurrent 'judge's pick' part of the contest, which would show their picks for each round once the contest with public voting has ended. We shall see if the consider it.
Good luck.
What a wonderful idea! I had my hopes up for Northwest #19: Catherine's Outside Inside and would love to see that the very (almost professionally) well designed houses get credit from the folks at AT. Ours by no means is professional looking, just some paint cans and about a thousand trips to the flea market, but homes like yours and Catherine's are magazine worthy and should get the credit they deserve! Thanks for responding to us! No hard feelings here!
I love your house. I love your use of color, texture and light. You truly did a phenomenal job! Thank you so much for sharing. It is very inspiring.
Your home is a stunner R&R - I was rooting for you!
Hi R&R-
This is Jamie. I would have loved competing with you, too, and, honestly, I was certain that we would face off! Something strange happened during our round of voting in the middle of the night, as well...maybe there's someone out there REALLY voting for Damien & Rachel. Ah well! It was still fun. There's no denying that you have a beautiful home!
wonderful house loved it so much .. bookmarked it :)... was following the discussion above ... it doesnt matter whether u win or not .. u have house just to die for ...
