In recent years, attractive woven vinyl mats have appeared on the market—their über wipe-ability along with a slim profile has made them an ideal choice in many design scenarios. When I saw a pile of roller blinds at a second hand shop I quickly realized I could easily create my own version with nothing but a pair of scissors.
The blind I selected had a similar woven texture and a very contemporary feel. The neutral color makes the mat versatile, and the fact that I can get a clean cut without the worry of fraying ends means I can get multiples from the same blind if desired.
What I love about this re-use is how simple and inexpensive it is to get a fresh look. It's the perfect solution to cover outdated or damaged floors, or just offer up some definition to a space. Because of the material, you can even use the mat outdoors to liven up a balcony or front porch.
If you end up with smaller remnants after you cut-a-rug, consider making custom placemats or coasters from the excess!
note: apply beads of silicon caulking to the underside to prevent bunching in high-traffic areas
