Are you ready for an incredibly easy and inexpensive Ikea hack that packs a punch? Follow me to find out more...

Buy two Ikea sheepskin rugs and sew them together for one long runner with a new and organic shape. Does it get any easier? All you have to do is sew the lining edge of the rugs together with a multifilament polyester thread, the kind used for upholstery or canvas. It took me about an hour and I ended up with a great new rug that cost me $20 (I used the faux sheepskin rugs). It works great in a hallway, a long narrow area or beside a bed.

Sprout Side Table
These are faux fur rugs. They are not being used next to a bed so no worries about hopping out of bed onto them in your bare feet. The rugs are really cute, although, as I found out the hard way, turn into something completely different if you wash them. (Maybe it was the dryer that completely changed them even though I used cool water?)
Rugs are really expensive and add so much to a room - even if this hack isn't to your taste, putting together two smaller rugs is a good idea since the smaller rugs are often much less expensive than getting one big one.
I actually have two of these rugs that I'm using to cover to a slipper chair. My cats like to lay on anything that I don't want them to lay on, hence using the rugs for a cute and stylish cover (the slipper chair is cream so the cream rugs looks good on it). I like the idea of sewing them together. Again, you kind of have to hit me over the head with inspiration and although I own two of these rugs I've never thought to sew them together to get that bigger shearling rug that I want...so when the cats are no longer with us this is an option for me because I'm not sure what else I'd do with the little rugs because they really are too small to use on the floor. Sewing them together to make them larger also makes them more functional. So thank you for the post!!
@LolaLalaBean I got one of these to use as a bed for my kitty, but instead his instincts kicked in and he attacked it incessantly.
Good idea, but a bit too symmetrical to me. It looks like photoshop irl.
Why did my previous comment, along with other people's comments, get deleted?
I believe that all of those comments violated the commenting guidelines. They were simply not on topic. Criticism of AT can be directed at the editors. This is all highlighted in the comment policy below.
Ah, good to know.
@maraudingcat That is too funny! My cats had the opposite reaction. They've completely avoided the chair since I put those rugs on it. I guess they think it might be their hide next..haha... Now I just need to get a couple for my kitchen bar stools. I recovered them in vintage fabric I got at Brimfield last year and the cats have really taken to them. I guess that's the perils of living with animals. I have 2 small'ish dogs also so I'm always having to think of how my interior decor works with the 4 animals in my house, and the 2 horses outside (because I'm always tracking in mud or dirt).
I really like this! I was curious before clicking the after what exactly the hack would be on a RUG, but it's all come together (literally.)
A good idea for making a longer custom rug!
@maurding cat still super lame of them to delete them, so I guess I will repost the part of mine about the actual topic.
I think this is a great simple hack. I wonder if you could match up some of the edges to make it larger width wise.
I actually LOVE this idea!! So doing this.
Cute idea! Just be careful and not wash it, the texture totally changes!
Hah, to chime in on the kitty conversation...my cat is totally in love with mine. No matter where I put it (usually draped over the chaise part of our sectional) he rolls are with it, drooling, totally blissed out like he finally found his soulmate.
It's pretty adorable.
Dryer, almost for sure.
Probably safe to machine wash in cold water on gentle with something like Woolite, but then air dry on some surface that lets the water drain away and not pool under the rugs. (Ideally outdoors in good wether.) Spin cycle can cause problems, though, so things would probably be wetter than usual...
I LOVE this idea! I already have 1 of these rugs and was just thinking the other day that I wished it were bigger to use on the side of the bed. Guess where I am heading to this weekend??? IKEA! Going to get another one and complete my first ever IKEA hack! Thank you AT for this post.
I have two of these rugs as well, and have been debating sewing them together. Now I'm convinced!
second time my comment that pertains to a post and falls under the comment policty has been deleted. AT... wtf
I love Ikea's sheepskin rugs and have two that add glamor on the cheap. But this....this rug hack looks like Mr. Hanky.
I have one of these that I use to cover a chair. Someone else mentioned her cats, and mine love this rug. They lay around on it right next to the windows - especially when it's sunny.
I adore this hack! As other has stated, DO NOT put your faux Sheepskin rugs through the laundry machines. I ruined mine that way.
