We encounter piles of household alkaline batteries all the time when we're working with clients of our organizing business. Last night, during an errand, we were delighted to discover where folks can now bring old batteries for recycling...
Whole Foods! (At least the Whole Foods in Brighton, MA.) The Stoughton Ikea also has a battery recycling bin but not everyone makes it to Stoughton. A while ago we blogged about Whole Foods providing plastic bag recycling. Last night, we also noticed that they've added a cell phone recycling bin.
Have you found any other local sources for recycling old batteries?

ikea has a battery drop off as well as a flourescent bulb drop off.
Unfortunately we now live far from any ikea or whole foods.
Best Buy now recycles electronics.
In DC, you can recycle CFLs at Greater Goods, on U St.
Our local library.
Radioshack takes them too.
My town dump has a bin.
The Whole Foods I shop at do this (River St., Prospect St., Alewife locations in Cambridge), fwiw.
