Tile can totally transform the look of a room. But often times, beautiful, dramatic tiles have equally dramatic prices. The good news is that even if you can't afford the budget-busting tile of your dreams, there are things you can do with less expensive tiles that will elevate them far above the ordinary.

Embrace an unusual pattern.
Inexpensive doesn't have to mean boring. Smaller hex tiles (as seen above, from The Home Depot Blog) and even larger subway tiles (as in this bathroom from Stories) can be laid in interesting ways that make them an eye-catching statement.

Dark grout.
Usually grout is a bit of an afterthought when tiling, but as this kitchen from Miss Moss proves, very dark grout can turn inexpensive white tiles into a striking statement. If you're looking for something really bold, you can even try colored grout.

Play with color.
Mixing up the same tile in different colors (as in the bathroom above, from The Hunted Interior, or in the colorful herringbone subway tile installation from Design Milk) is a great way to get a dramatic effect without spending a lot of money.

Add a little accent.
Mix things up a little! In this bathroom from Alice Lane Home, inexpensive subway tile gets a boost from the addition of a bit of (similarly inexpensive) penny tile. Also note the row of square tiles along the bottom of the shower, a subtle but elegant touch.
