The Easy-to-Grow Mushroom Garden from Back to the Roots is a sustainable way to grown your own mushrooms, indoors and at home! The product launched in March at the Whole Foods in Berkeley, California. How does it work? Just place the box (filled with its special coffee ground soil) on a windowsill and mist twice a day. Within 7 days you'll see little mushroom start to poke out, and within a few more days you should have about 1 lb of mushrooms. Each box provides 2-4 harvests. The mushroom garden even has the seal of approval from Alice Waters! Check out a video below:
Back to the Roots was founded in 2009 by Alex Velez and Nikhil Arora, and their intent is to create sustainable grow-at-home products, like their mushroom garden. So far, their mushroom garden has "diverted and transformed over 50,000 lbs of coffee grounds into a rich soil for gourmet mushrooms, sustained 10 urban school and community gardens by donating BTTRs premium soil amendment, and grown 7,500lbs of delicious gourmet mushrooms sold at all Nor Cal Whole Foods Markets."
The mushroom garden sells for $19.95! Buy it for yourself or as a gift! Read more about them in this article from The New York Times Bay Area section.
