Eco-Friendly Fresh Snack Packs

It's time for picnics, road trips, vacations and long days spent at the park or beach. If you're planning on taking your snacks and lunches with you, these PVC-free, non-toxic plastic and reuseable bags can hold anything from a BLT to Goldfish crackers and even a pasta salad! Crystal Figlietti was tired of the waste generated by individual zip lock bags. She's a mother of three and when she did the math (3 kids times 2 bags a day for a school year) she decided to take action and thus Fresh Snack Packs were born.

They come in two different sizes, a sandwich size that is 8" x 6" closed and fits a whole sandwich or a large portion of fruit or snacks (8" x 17 1/2" when opened flat). Plus there's a smaller snack size that's 6" x 4" closed and is perfect for a handful of crackers or fruit (6" x 12" when opened flat). They retail at $4.50 and $5.50 each and would be a great thing to have packed in your picnic basket this summer. Plus, once lunch is gone, small found treasures can be stored in them for the ride home!

I like the concept, but I'm still suspicious of EVA. I wonder if scientists are going to find something in it years from now that was just as toxic as what it was replacing.

If someone is buying these to use instead of plastic baggies, then I suppose it is an improvement. I just wish we could get away from plastics for our food.

Doesn't your food get all squashed and messy when carried in a bag?
I still prefer Lock&Lock food containers, much better than a bag.

i like the idea....but i'm a little hesitant about the plastic, like Erica in DC, and I would also prefer a really simple solution to replace baggies - ie something dishwasher safe. I guess the answer to that would be glass but then that's heavy....

I want to get away from plastics, too. I have Pyrex bowls with plastic lids for food storage, but the glass is too heavy for packing a lunch.

But I suddenly thought of tin boxes! The kinds that cookies, candies, and teas come in. There are thousands at the thrift stores.

These should be safe for lunches, no? They're lightweight, sturdy, cheap (or even free), and as long as there's no rust or paint on the food surfaces, it should be safe. You could even put them in the dishwasher if you don't mind the design washing off.

Any thoughts??

It doesn't seem like these would be waterproof? My husband works outside so his lunch sits in a van all day with an icepack that sweats, so I could see his sandwich getting soggy. I've been looking at reusable lunch pouches on etsy and see they mostly have hook and loop closure. Not sure how that would be either? Any thoughts?
