While I'm not sold on low couches, I love beds that are on or hover just off the ground. Done thoughtlessly, a mattress on the floor will look like it belongs in a sloppy dorm room, but a well executed low bed is relaxed and looks effortless.
I appreciate a nice big brass or upholstered frame, but, for me, a bed close to the ground feels much more inviting.
The look can tend more modern, but Images 2 and 9 show how it also can work well with antiques and worn-in materials. How do you feel about low beds? If you're into it, check out Laure's tips for making the look work in your home.

Just don't put the mattress on the ground. Can get moldy underneath.....
oh, I don't know about that. I like to climb into a bed. I hate to crawl in and out of bed. Feels so lowly...literally.

Haha my old bones do not enjoy trying to get up out of bed in the morning. Trying to climb up off the floor ain't doin' it for me!
I think some of these look lovely, but I wouldn't do them at my house.
Not a fan of the low beds, myself. If I had to actually get UP in the morning, I probably would stay in bed more often. Also, I think the "low bed" trend is a ploy by manufacturers to get by with using use less material and reduce shipping costs.
our mattress is currently on the floor.
not an ideal situation, but until we have a bedframe made, we're flying low for now.
i actually adore low-lying beds. and in our extremely small space, it gives the illusion of the room being taller and more spacious.
My bed is low-ish, and it is comfortable in terms of getting in and out of. I am almost 5' 11", and have had it on the floor (bad, bad idea; mold and other reasons) and about 6" above the floor, where it was ridiculously uncomfortable (but looked very cool). I've got a platform bed and mattress and am really happy with that setup, but would never go lower than that again.
When I think of all the times I've seen a matress just on the floor, it has always been someone in thier early 20's who couldn't afford and a proper bed, I'm not saying that's the case for the pictured bedrooms, but that is the way I feel about matresses on the floor - I have slept in a bed on the floor, and it is not for me!
I am obsessed with the last pic on the first row.
I've always loved low beds, reminds me of Japan.
I love low beds! Not a mattress on the floor, mind you, but something low. I don't like climbing into bed, which is our current set-up. Really like 2 and 10, but at my age I really like having a good sprung base.
ha, i clipped the last photo when it was first posted a while back. Still looks great!
I love my low bed. We originally bought it to tuck under the eaves in an attic bedroom, but now I have a normal-height room and I still think it looks awesome.
I sleep on a tatami bed, best thing I've ever bought.
I saw Dabito's place on Alice in Designland recently. I LOVE it! Bedroom and all
I have a low bed much like #2.
I personally like it better than being perched high off the floor its to scale in height with my furniture everything being on the lower side and my dog does not hurt his back jumping on and off. I would consider having a more traditional style higher bed if I had really high ceilings otherwise I don't like the hotel feeling.
I love low beds. For the better part of 5 years, I slept on a traditional futon about 6 inches off the ground. Absolutely love it. I have a regular bed now, but its still on the low side. I do not like climbing into our out of bed.
...I will just add that I find low beds to be sexier. There is just something... uptight... about high beds.
My best friend lived in a studio for a while, and didn't have the cash for a new bed so I lent him my futon. He put it all the way in a corner, lined it with pillows and put a steamer trunk at the foot. It doubled as a couch and, in that garden-level apartment, worked GREAT.
I love low beds, they seem so much more serene. My favorite bed was 6" off the floor (I built the frame myself). I wish I hadn't sold it when I moved out of state. :(
Would love to know if anyone has a source for the bed in #2, or something similar.
I actually dropped my bed down off of basic rails to rest on the ground with the introduction of a new puppy to the household, last spring. I'm on the lookout for something that won't raise it more than 3-4 inches off the ground, so that he can still get on and off safely. Personally, I prefer low beds, they do seem sexier somehow. Also, I'm 5' tall, and sick of having to climb up on furniture. For reals.
I'm guessing my bed on the floor doesn't count as "effortless" if I literally put no effort into it...
Had to ditch my beautiful frame when I moved into a room that literally can't fit one....
@embryoconcepts - I have endless platform bed info looking and searching finding a style but hated the finish, etc. that bed is -The Elemento Bed by Roberto Grossi use to be carried by DWR.
I ended up going to Charles P. Rogers and got this platform bed and had a custom low profile headboard made. The quality is excellent and great customer service. I did not want chrome or metal legs because I live in a damp area and pitting is an issue.

I don't know about mattresses on the floor, but I absolutely LOVE low beds. My bed is quite high off the ground, and I would much prefer to climb up out of bed than climb down.
I have a West Elm frame wood bed frame, (not to be confused with TALL wood bed frame,) without a springbox. Although I love my lowish bed, I really miss out on is being able to really use the space underneath. The measurements read about 9" height but with the wood, theres actually 4" clearance underneath, and I havent found ANY type of under bed storage that size. Really WE? you couldnt make under bed storage for your own low bed? REALLY?? maybe thats why my frame has been discontinued this year...
ok, thanks for allowing the rant : )
I love a low bed. I had one until a couple of years ago when I bought a new mattress -- thicker than I thought.
Personally, I don't like climbing up into bed nor do I like the bed to take up too much visual space.
Also, when you're in a low bed and you look up at the ceiling, you have breathing room.
But I get that this is a personal preference.
I like looking at low beds, but I love sleeping in high beds.
embryoconcepts - "for reals", are you from Hawaii? If not, I have to say you sure talk like one of us :-)
Plus, Hawaii is filled with us 5 footers.
Pros of high beds:
1. Easier to get out of if you are aging and not so limber anymore.
2. Good in smaller rooms - say, if a chest is not too far from bed, it would loom over you if the bed was low.
Pros of low beds:
1. Make some rooms seem bigger - because bed takes up less space visually.
2. Easier to get into.
and, the best reason,
3. When you aren't sleeping alone, low beds make for many more possibilities - you can put feet down, and you don't fall out.
Smellykelly and I are on the same page: my bones are too old to be hoisting themselves up from the floor. I spent two months doing that as my MBR was renovated, and coupled with a dislocated shoulder, I was liked a beached whale every morning. Glad to be back in my sleigh bed.
There's a difference between a low bed and a mattress on the floor. Low beds are great-looking and unless you're a senior citizen you really should be able to get into and out of one.
i have a thing for very low and very high beds. i suppose i love extremes.
i love the look and orientation of the beds in the rooms of #3 and #4. i like 3's elevated platform. it's still a low bed, but the whole area is higher. i wish i could see the rest of that room. and i like 4 because it caters to a certain aesthetic. a low bed in this decor seems very exotic. i also love the simplicity of low beds, the feeling of being uncluttered.
but with low beds, you lose valuable storage space. odly enough i had HIGH beds in college (as apposed to the mattress on the floor poor bohemian). i set it on it's highest position. i did it mostly because though the dorm room's foot print was so small, the the ceiling were fantastically high. being on the top floor gave me a great view and it just felt nice to be elevated (in addition to having ample space beneath me to use as storage.)
both extremes are definitely for the young and able bodied. i fretted i would roll out of bed one day and forget i was up so high!
Not me.. I love my high bed.. Aside from just not wanting to be that close to the floor, it's also more likely for creepy bugs to crawl from the floor into your bed.. ew.
low beds are nice, Less shaking during sexy time. And the best part is the kids can climb into bed in weekend, which puts a damper on sexy time.
I personally feel like my bed is too high, I'm only 5'1 and my bed is 28" high. I'm also moving soon into a way smaller room so my high bed is becoming a concern for me =/ I like my space!
Like my clumsy self needs the bed to be further out of my line of sight. I trip over it enough as it is.
Since I'm not one to have animals in the bed, this feels too much like an invitation for the dogs and cat to climb right in with me and my husband.
My bedframe is high enough for me to store things under as well, which is essential for our storage difficulties in our house.
I really like sliding out of it in the morning too. That way, as soon as my feet touch the ground, I'm practically standing.
Laughing about the first photo. When my dog was a puppy his favorite place to lift his leg was anything hanging off the bed. I had to tuck all my corners in off of the floor. I just don't like the idea of my bedding laying on the floor like that exposed to animals and dirt.
For a long time now I have been keeping my bed mattress on the floor with out a bed frame or a box spring. When I got a frame it just was not the same anymore and it did not feel right to me so I send the frame back!
