Earlier this year, we took a break from the hospital-corner-aesthetic and dove into some elegantly unkempt bedrooms to mixed reviews. Although the look tends to drive neatniks crazy, some people just don't make the bed on a daily basis. For all you messy folks out there, here are 10 styles that will make it seem like you left the covers untucked on purpose.
- Matteo's Fil Coupe Duvet Cover (a luxury fabric that's garment dyed and washed) will set you back a whopping $995. Perfect for people who are so busy pulling in tons of money that they don't have time to make the bed.
- Les Indiennes is a high-end retailer that makes Indian block-print bedding. Call stores for pricing.
- A less expensive option is West Elm's Organic Cotton Pintuck Duvet Cover for $79 - $119. The textured surface hides wrinkles and looks great rumpled.
- For a beach resort vibe with wrinkle-proof fabric, try Serena and Lily's Ruched Quilt, $230 at at Layla Grace.
- If you like the hippie chic look, check out John Robshaw's Indigo Turban Quilt. It's pricey at $325 - $435, but the tie-dyed pattern looks grooviest when it's left untucked.
- Pine Cone Hill's Utopia Sable Blanket ($109 - $185) is a lightweight, casual bedspread made from 45% bamboo and 55% cotton.
- The Tonal Waterfall Ruffle Duvet Cover at Urban Outfitters ($148) looks like a prom dress that's been nonchalantly tossed across the bed.
- DwellStudio's Draper Stripe Duvet Set ($280) is the bedding equivalent of a seersucker suit. It's cool, comfortable, and not too serious.
- Eileen Fisher's Washed Linen Bedding ($75 - $278 at Garnet Hill) comes pre-wrinkled and worry-free.
- Area's Louie Coverlet ($290 - $330 at Design Public) has a ribbed texture that looks best when it's slightly scrunched.

It's actually healthier to leave your bed unmade. It gives you mattress a chance to breath and dry out from the night and keeps down bacterial growth and dust mites.
I wonder if you could make your own linen sheets -- hmm -- come on AP, we need aDIY on this one.
#1, lol. Guess it has to be felt to be believed! And even then....
I bought the West Elm pintuck cover and found it to be poorly thought out... Tiny rips happen all the time from normal use because there are so many individual sections sewn up with very little string. Just a head's up before someone wastes $100! If you aren't actually going to use it while sleeping it's lovely, however.
Elbebuz, right on. Yes, please a DIY on how to make linen sheets. And maybe a non fussy linen dust-ruffle while you're at it!...;)
I agree with Snowdin, you have to let your bed 'air' out after you have slept in it. However, that doesn't mean you have to leave it unmade, simpley make it then fold the covers back!
I looooooove unkept beds. Makes me want to crawl right back in where I got out.
I love the look of unkept beds, but I do like them to look somewhat purposeful.
I don't think rumpled means messy. I "make" my bed every day, but all that entails is pulling the duvet cover up to the pillows and maybe flopping the sides a bit to get it to puff back up. I love the soft, rumpled, cozy look and think that platform beds with precicely folded corners and everything tucked sternly under the bed look so cold and stark and uncomfortable. it's just an aesthetic, not a value judgement on messy vs. clean :)
Agreed, fragglefemme. The rumpled look is so inviting, and easy to maintain. Studies also show that an unmade bed is better for your sex life!
instead of laying out a whopping $995 for those linen beauties, I bet I could go to Pearl Paint Art Supply store and buy raw linen at a fraction & dye or bleach... would just need to figure out how to soften it and make it non-shrinking for the washer... I'm still waiting for AP's take on a DIY.
