- What I Love About My Small Home:
- We love *deep breath* our library, our bright colored walls, our old building details, our art deco lighting fixtures, the DIY up the wazoo from chandeliers to wookiee message boards to reupholstery projects, our silly mural, our bed nook, and our cats. I think we're most proud of having brought it all together on a shoestring budget with all thrift shop or side of the road furniture.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Ever since we came up with our unusual room set up (you may want to see our floor plan for more detail), it feels like we've got plenty of room for two people. We lost a lot of storage for our set up, but it's all hidden under the bed and behind the books. Being able to paint was a game changer for us. I think a lot of time when people can't paint all the areas run together. Each of our rooms is a different bright color, and a different theme. It really helps us focus on how many different areas we have.

What color/brand is the kitchen? It looks really nice.
Confession:
I only voted for this cause they have CHEWBACCA in their kitchen. How cool is that!!
I adore the color scheme in the living room.
I assume the now-office was originally the bedroom, and the bed is now in what was originally a large closet? I like the idea of the sleeping nook but something about the design of it still feels rather closet-y rather than nook-y.
So far though, this is the first entry I've bothered to favorite this year. I feel like there's a dearth of fairly uninteresting spaces this year.
That painting of Teddy Roosevelt is to die for.
*a dearth of interesting spaces. Let's use that word correctly, now. ^_^
Was this a Room for Color entry? That second picture looks familiar. Either way, I really like it. I think it's a great idea to use the bedroom for more living space, and have the bed in the "nook".
You put the bed in the closet? I think I would have done the opposite..but the office in the closet and the bed in the bedroom..you must get more use out of the office than the bedroom.
Adorable! And very cool! Interesting choice using that tiny room as a sleeping nook instead of using the larger office space as a bedroom. How do you wake up in the morning!?!? It's too cozy!
The livingroom looks kind of 'grandm-y' to me but I don't mean that in a bad way. It's warm and cozy. I like the bed in the closet. The only thing is that it might be hard to make the bed in such tight quarters.
Like the turquoise shelf in the kitchen and the 'fairy' lights in the bedroom.
I love the library...great collection of old art!
Sorry not enough pictures to vote it a favorite. I would have liked to see the kitchen and the bathroom. Liked the choice of paint colors though.
How is the storage hidden behind the books? On each shelf? or behind the bookcases?
But in any case, I love this place. I know we've seen the living room on AT before and I love the color choices you've made.
Wouldn't want to have to make that bed, though.
This looks a lot like a building I used to live in but with a sweeter floor plan and walls that are way more interesting.
In any case, I love the humor and personality of this space. Clearly closets-as-bedrooms aren't for everyone, but personally I think having a bed in just-big-enough space is the epitome of coziness. Is that a milk delivery door at the foot of the bed?
I love bedroom-in-a-closet. It reminds me of Scandinavian beds that are recessed into the wall ... I forgot what that's called. Alcove beds? Anyway... Think your living room and pink sofa are fantastic. As is Chewbacca.
I'm happy to see so many Seattle entries this year!
Hmmm...interesting walls!
I love the apartment, particularly the alcove bed. But I'm afraid that I would never get up in the morning without any windows to let the light in to help wake me up!
It's a great place. But full disclosure; you're getting my vote because of "Han Shot First".
The kitty chaise in the second photo!! I die.
Good morning Chewbaca!
I love this purely because of Chewie.
Chewy is the chicken. Now I've seen it all. What a bizarre, eclectic, awesome home!
Very nice and homey and clever. Lower the group of pictures above the sofa by about 16" and raise the center picture over the bookcases by 6".
Hi guys! Thanks so much for taking the time to look around and comment. I'll try to answer some questions.
@Mattab Thank you so much! I'm sorry I'm not going to be much help, our kitchen was an oops paint of the local hardware store's brand.
@Sophiasrevenge @Ana @Usbek de Perse @Toypixie etc Glad you like Chewbacca. I was a bit bummed to hear some of you saying you only like Chewbacca, but then I thought about how people say that about people's apartments and their cats and dogs (not judging, I love me some cute AT pet photos) and I thought, why not wookiees? Also, a big thanks to all the people who thought a cardboard cutout wookiee was tacky, and chose not to comment. I appreciate your tact!
@Alahoop My living room was indeed in Room for Color. I'm very flattered you remember me.
@Tracey333 You would have done the opposite? Like put the bed in the bedroom? No way! I kid, I kid. I think that's 99% of people, but we had the office in the closet, and I had no desk or place to lay out my sewing, and Derek had no place to work on his bikes, and now our place feels like a palace spacewise. Besides, it was fun to make our own built in.
@Evelymenm. You know they only let us pick 5 photos, right? I have 5 different wide shots of the apartment, no vignettes, I just have more than 5 areas. I'd love to share my kitchen, it's pretty great, but it's great in a nice butcher block counters and and old fashioned sink and ice boxes way, which honestly I had very little to do with other than choosing to move in, and I get bored in these contests when I see pictures of people's fixtures rather than their decorating. But here's my kitchen: http://tinyurl.com/7sswvaz http://tinyurl.com/6nkr3hq http://tinyurl.com/785s5cp
@Kalakala "humor and personality" is our bread and butter. Yes, there is a milk door at the foot of the bed. The cats use it to crawl from under the bed to on it, and scare the crap out of us in the middle of the night.
@Xarcady All miscellaneous small non-kitchen stuff is indeed behind the books. It's actually completely invisible, and really easy to retrieve.
@StevenJ Thanks for the compliment but no thanks on the advice. All the art you mention is at eye level, furthermore, if I took your advice, some of my pictures would be behind the couch!
After reading my comment again I could see how you may take that the wrong way. I meant that as a joke. Chewie took me for suprise. I loved it!!
@Sophiasrevenge Oh don't worry about it, it did not ruin my day. Mine response was meant to be playful banter too. Chewie's a charismatic figure, I knew before I submitted this that he'd be the deal sealer for some and a deal breaker for others.
Amazing wall color--an inspiration. And I heart your library. Can I steal that couch?
I love the light in the bedroom. Is that just a set of icicle Christmas lights?
@BGR5928 It is a set of icicle Christmas lights, and the old untrue wheel from my bicycle combined together to make a lightweight, earthquake safe chandelier.
I love the "grandma-y" look of the living room. It's cozy and quirky and cool.
Boooooooooooks! Why is Apartment Therapy so afraid of massive amounts of books? You guys pull it off spectacularly. :)
I'm fairly confused as to why the sparsely furnished office demands more square footage than the sleeping quarters. I think its inconvenient for the both of them, especially if any one needs to get out of bed at any point in the sleep cycle. Would it not be disturbing, and difficult to crawl over one another?
Congrats on being clever for your own sake, but I don't see it functioning very well. It seems like they almost WANT one of the 295 square foot places also seen on this site.
