Name: Elsa (11 months)
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Division: Single Room
Room Size: 66 square feet
Tip for Living Small with Kids: There's only so much space for toys, but thankfully most babies seem to have just a few favorites. So, our one tip would be to curate the collection of toys. Store some if possible; donate or sell on Craigslist, otherwise.
Biggest Design Challenge in this Room: Actually, the sheer creation of the room out of our existing floor plan was quite the challenge. We lived in a 1-bedroom apartment with no place for a baby. But then we came up with a plan to take 6.5' of our living room and separate it with an enormous door (5.5w x 8.5h) on a barn door track. This allowed us to maximize light into the living room during the day, while still giving Elsa a bedroom of her own.
Favorite Thing About This Room: Definitely, our favorite thing is that one whole wall of Elsa's room is windows. This lets in lots of light during the day and plus she can look out on to our terrace garden. (At night the room stays dark thanks to some heavy curtains.) We all enjoy pulling the curtains open in the morning and admiring the pretty blossoms.
Thanks for your entry Annie and good luck!

White Enamel Flatwa...
I love it! Everything a baby needs right there, clothes, book, playthings, a view to the outside world ;)
The wallpaper, the red and the white...cute and cozy perfection!
Love it! :)
I'm obsessed with the kitchen set!
Adorable! Love the tree wall paper.
Love it! Having a child right by a door to outside freaks me out a little though.
Cute and cozy, love it.
Absolutely adorable!
Darling little space!
Nothing short of gorgeous. Very impressed.
So sweet & delicious. KAtzRUL.
Love it!
So beautiful! Love the wallpaper! Great job.
This is wonderful! seems fun and interactive for your little one.
Awesome! and yes - catz rule! (im looking for spiro in the pic...i see mr gnome...)
We have an Elsa too! Love the little book shelves. Would you mind sharing where you found those? Thanks!
Also where who makes the kitchen set?
That's a KidKraft kitchen. We have a very similar one in different colors.
a favorite so far--this is excellent!
Thank you so much everyone! it is so fun to see it up on one of our favorite sites. The kitchen came from CL, but it is a KidKraft "retro" kitchen. If you look in the photo the person who sold it to us even gave us this funny coffee maker and mixer that make sounds and "work"...not sure where she found those but they are pretty hilarious. I got the bookshelves at WestElm...they are really "picture ledges." I think I saw the idea from Ohdeedoh! They really come in handy and inspire me to read more books to our lil E because I tend to rotate the titles around. thanks again!
Also the contractor that installed our door comes highly recommended. Diagrama Construction. They did such a quality job and were really quick which was v.helpful as we were all living in the apartment at the time! Laura 718-797-5726 diagrama@prodigy.net
Does lil E sublet her space to adults?....Awesome. . .I wish I could shrink myself for a few hrs. . . .
What a great little room! Awesome wallpaper. Good job!
can I have one , too! please... :)
Love the wallpaper, LOVE the gnome table! Awesome!
this room is to die for! wonderful!
Great space! I wish there were more apartment landlords who would allow wallpaper and installing sliding door. Did you have to twist their arm, or were they all for it?
Nice job! Great mix of calming neutrals and pops of spunky color!
Lovely! Where did you get the wallpaper?
Really love it. It's cute, organized, has personality...I'm just wondering if there's enough floor space for your babe to play?
As a fellow Brooklynite who used to have a 'barn-door room' off the living area- I have to say: I LOVE IT! What a beautiful little room! We live in a different apartment now but that room would have been used for our son as well- I really miss our barn-door room!
The room is not a very wide (6'-6") but luckily the kitchen happens to be small as well, so Elsa has about 3 feet in front of it...seems to be enough for her to get busy.
Truth be told she spends most of her time in the pile of toys in the living room but the fact that we have a space of her own is what makes this project special to us. Building this extra "room" makes a huge difference in all of our lives. (especially our cat's) We love it. Thank you so much for appreciating it. It truly is an extension of Elsa. She's cute and has lots of personality with a pop of color.
The wallpaper is Cole and Sons "Woods" and Dow & Company did the installation. Recommended through AT no less! Thanks! Great job.
What a wonderfully creative way to create a space for your daughter! I agree there is plenty of space in there to play ... kids really are so flexible .... I think we can really underestimate that beautiful trait in children. Thanks for sharing Elsa's barn door hideaway!
I love the hanging baskets! They look so familiar. Would love to know where you got them. Any ideas?
this is beyond beautiful, I love the forest wallpaper. Amazing!
@Susan Dwyer Riley: The hanging baskets are an old IKEA stand-by. A million and one uses for them!
So sweet!
