Name: Emily Prugar
Location: Old Town — Alexandria, Virginia
Size: 1,200 square feet
Years lived in: 2
Like many of our own home tours would be, Emily Prugar's is short and sweet. Although it's a small house, it's full of furniture and fabric appointments that took considered thought, including subtle details such as miniature patterns and warm touches such as pastel accessories. Emily started designing her space two years ago, and enjoyed nesting alongside her other pursuits: raising a toddler, attending the Corcoran College of Art + Design, and starting her own interiors business, M House Designs.
Some apartments look thrown together: a trip to IKEA here, raiding of parents' stash there, and maybe some framed prints from college. But Emily's apartment looks genuinely adult and well thought-out. She sets a warm foundation in all rooms that never tips over into being too cutesy or girly. With a heather-taupe sofa, brown leather chairs, and an Odegard rug in her living room, the stage is set for the details: a unique piece of art, a textured lampshade, and the reflective nature of the mirrors and glass coffee table. In the dining room, an antique dining table and custom shades are relaxed, and contrast a twisty chandelier and dramatic black chairs perfectly.
The only place she lets herself get girly is in her daughter's nursery. Pink walls and pink toile window treatments let you know that a girl lives there, but maybe not a gaggle of girls.
If anything, though, what's truly impressive about this apartment is Emily's restraint, both in her design choices, and in the lack of clutter. She admits that it's difficult, when having lots of children's toys and lots of paperwork from working at home, but she manages with class &mdash and lots of baskets.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My/ Style: Southern Modern
Inspiration: My childhood in the South and an appreciation for art and the natural world. I worked in several art galleries throughout undergrad and I am now finishing my masters at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. I love surrounding myself with beautiful things and I will usually go to an art exhibit for inspiration for a client's space [as part of her business, M House Designs]. I also try to substitute environmentally friendly products whenever I can; most of the manufacturers I spec. for clients are green. I also try to find functional objects to hang on the walls as my art. The pitch forks in my dining room are 100 years old from Turkey and the tapestry in our bedroom was literally crumbling when I had it framed.
Favorite Element: My butterfly artwork from Butterfly People. It is incredibly beautiful and it helps support conservation of the rain forest.
Biggest Challenge: Keeping out clutter. It is especially hard when you are running a business from home and you have a toddler. I find that big chunky baskets are great for hiding my daughters toys and my papers. Since we live in a 1,200-square-foot apartment we have be creative with our storage solutions and we have to edit our displays and surface clutter. I try to rotate artwork and my daughter's toys. Mirrors, lighting and drapes help to make our living room and dining room appear larger. I try to keep our bedroom especially clean so I can relax at the end of a long day.
What Friends Say: Our house is always very welcoming and they always stay longer than they planned.
Proudest DIY: Most of my photo gallery on the staircase are paper clippings and old photos that I framed to look like priceless art.
Biggest Indulgence: My chandelier from International Ironware and my "big girl bed" from France.
Best advice: Buy what you love and what will make you happy every single day you see it. You will find room for it.
Dream source:I loved Domino magazine and kept all my old copies. I also watch certain designers to see what they are working on. Right now I really love Darryl Carter, Thomas O'Brien, Kerry Joyce and Suzanne Rheinstein.

I love the butterfly piece. Gorgeous furniture!
I love the rocking chair in the nursery. Any chance there's a source for it? Thank you
I love those bedside lamps. Just a little vintage and femme. I would like to see more of this house, like the kitchen and also the stairs/hallway that has the artwork described. There is mention of storage baskets but we don't really get to see this in action. More, please!
Beautiful place :) It's understated, but not at all boring. Talk about true eye candy!
I'd constantly be falling asleep if I lived there. It's so cozy, I'd just keep sinking into what looks like an extremely comfortable sofa and conk out.
1200 square feet and 16 photos not including the kitchen and bathroom(s). This house tour is awfully incomplete. It would be nice to see more.
Calm & serene... but would have loved to see the kitchen and bathroom
Wwwhhaaat!! No kitchen?
Very classy.
I love the hutch/bookshelf in the living room. It would have been nice to at least see what has been done with the kitchen.
It's always interesting seeing abodes on AT that are actually close to me. Being Old Town, this is VERY close. Places here are typically be restrained to smaller square footage, but this looks open, airy, comfortable, and very well thought out. Not necessarily what I expected for a place around here.
I like this. There is a nice mix of light and dark elements, both in colors and textures and it works well. I know that's my own struggle in my house, getting that balance right, so I particularly appreciate it when I see others doing it so well.
Lovely home.
Ok, am I the only one that noticed the big animal on the dining table? Is that a cat? It looks more like a panther!
love what i saw.... but i didn't get to see the whole house. kitchen? bathroom? entry? work area? glad to NOT see a tv dominate the living room.
Not my style... but so well done. Bravo!
Good work Emily! Love your inspiration/advice and appreciate that you are buying green and local. Your lovely home feels more like a house than an apartment.
Like inlandbeachhouse, I would wish to see the other half of the space. I am left wondering what kind of workspace set up you use as you run your business from home. Would love to see a full shot of the twisty chandelier & baskets as mentioned, as well as the pitch forks and photo gallery on the staircase. Kitchen & entry? The dog is adorable but(t)...
Hey, Emily, if you see this... do you recall which upholstery fabric you chose for your Cisco Bros. couch? And did you make the Roman blinds yourself or hire a seamstress? Why, yes, I'm loving textiles in your home, how'd you guess? :)
@Loida2082
I couldn't tell either! I was wondering about that but by the end of the tour I completely forgot to comment about it too!
i would love to know where the shades came from in the livingroom (3 window area)
@Loida2082 and dunklekatze
I believe the 'big animal' on the table is a Chinese pug dog statue. Never seen one in black, though. (Hmmm, was it pug dog or Ming dog...or Ming dynasty pug dog...something like that.)
I believe the dog on the table is a dog. From visiting the web site of the homeowner I see that he/she strikes a different pose in another photo.
Sometimes I get the feeling that people aren't reading...some of the questions asked here could be answered in the resources etc. Just saying.
Your living room hutch/bookshelf is my dream come true. I need it.
Incredibly tasteful, artfully arranged and polished...without looking like a lifeless showroom. Nicely done! Ditto on the bookcase, ifmyheart. I had the same reaction!
Do you mind sharing where the dining room chairs came from? Thank you!
nice
Simple, warm, and inviting. Well done!
@karenajane the chairs look like the Norvald from Ikea:

What a lovely home! To me, restraint usually comes off phony & stiff, but yours is wonderful. And I don't usually like distressed either, but your dining table looks so authentic.
Kudos!
Very nice. I kept all my old issues of Domino too.
Worst write up yet in an AT post, sorry but the first paragraph is barely intelligible.
Such a warm and inviting place! The butterfly piece is stunning.
Beautiful! The butterfyl piece is especially amazing.
What a classy place!
Sigh....I mean really,...how can you expect me to be more jealous of your beautiful home if you don't show all of it...geesh!
Very comfortable home. Nice choices. Did I miss the foto gallery over the staircase you mention?
Nice place. I like the little clay bird figurine/statute in the living room. And the bookcase is to die for. Although, I'm concerned about the mirror hanging directly above the sofa. It's so close. I considered placing a mirror over my sofa, but I'm afraid careless people will hit it when they plop down. Has this been an issue? How are you holding it up?
very pretty!
