- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love the underdog story of my home - it is old (built in 1914) and for a long time, very run down. A great pair of house flippers found it in 2007 and made it what it is today. It has been a great pleasure turning this place into my home. And there's no better neighborhood in the Midwest than Covington, Kentucky.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The hardest thing for me is incorporating new colors or patterns into a room. Since you can see the back of the house and the rooms in between from a single vantage point, anything new (or in my case, it's usually "new-to-me") brought in must jive with the rest of the house. I'm currently trying to make that mint green door work - I'm on the fence!

Love the yellow chairs!
Lots of cute details-- and very swank kitchen chairs. Nice!
It's cute, but covington is my least favorite in all of NKY and sourthern OH
love the gold chairs!
Oooooo very nice
Your place is beautiful! Very open, sunny and inviting. I'm with you on the mint door, though. I'm thinking perhaps more a sage green might blend with the deeper, richer tones elsewhere in the apartment while keeping it light and bright? Those chairs are definitely a great find!
Great dining room chairs.
I love the mint green door! I just think you should complement it with something bolder. Maybe a magenta :)
I love it!
Why not try a door color that is same or similar shade of dining room chairs?
Love it all! Everything is so light and pretty but feels solid. Colors nice. Great tree wallpaper. I'm from Cincinnati - so way to represent!!!
Beautiful! Can't help but be a little jealous!
Where can I get the wallpaper?? Is that wallpaper?
Gorgeous! Love the pops of color!
yellow chairs!!!!!! love!!! love!!!! love!!!!
I'd like to know about the birds-on-trees wallpaper too. Or is it a stencil? Lovely place.
All that white would drive me cra, but yay for Covington and historic preservation. I'm in the Woodford.
Stealing the Rise and Shine poster print idea as we speak!
Love those yellow chairs and wallpaper! Very cute and chic place.
Being a Cincinnatian, I love seeing such a stylish entry from across the river! Beautiful, clean and light. Nice job!
I love everything you've done! Good Luck!
Those chairs are definitely bangin', and I love the idea to paint the door that same color. It would provide continuity between the rooms and complement the green couch.
ohhh be still my heart! i need chairs like those!
Those yellow chairs have me salivating!
We got married in Covington, KY :)
Also, that chalkboard floor plan is awesome!
My art teacher is painting trees like that on the walls of her living room. If only I wasn't in high school.... *swoon*
The yellow chairs!
Absolutely beautiful, I love how eclectic yet balanced it is. (I presume I need not beg you to avoid matching the front door to something you already have, clearly you know how do something new that will add another balanced element without merely matching). And I too love the blackboard floorplan. I think this is the only entry where I've loved every single picture.
I love this place. I have an old house two and this is just the vibe I wish mine had. I LOVE your mint door. Great job.
Everyone is so awesome. Thanks so much. The wallpaper (it's wallpaper!) is Cavern Home's Blackbird. I bought it from DesignPublic. I used my stimulus check (remember those?) back in 2008 to buy it. There's no way I could normally afford something like that.
The yellow chairs were gifted to my boyfriend believe it or not. He is an art director and was on the set of a local commercial. Those chairs were props in a Christmas scene. The next day they were at my house. I'm not sure why they ended up at my house versus my boyfriend's house but I figured it would be better to not ask any questions. :)
@katinam I like that idea a lot. Glidden has a color called Spicy Banana Pepper that is yellow with a hint of green. I've had the paint swatch on that mint door for awhile. But then, there's always the opportunity to re-upholstery the lime green sofa. Options can be so crippling for me when it comes to making decisions
@EDF the white makes me cra. A good cra but a high maintenance cra at that. I have become decent friends with Magic Erasers
@YellowBrickHome ah! I love you guys! You have my vote over and over. Second of all, where did you get married in Covington? Are you from around here? I would be so proud if you were!
The chairs are to die for! And I also love the chest you placed the TV on. Fire place in the bedroom...fantastic. Nice space!
Love the design on the wall, the yellow chairs, and the white-on-white look with the floors and vintage wood furniture. Your bf clearly knew those chairs would be perfect for you.
We need more stimulus checks!
Love it! Your home has great bones and your decorating touches only enhance them. I want to see more!!
This is beautiful and unique in so many ways.
Beautiful apartment!!
but am I the only person wondering how 900SF for one person qualifies as a "small" space? It seems like plenty of room, especially compared to some of the other studios that have been posted. Also, I have a roomie and we share 650 SF... (maybe I'm just jealous!) :)
@ margaret5587...900SF is the limit for the space....doesn't matter how many people live there!
you have to check out her blog...this house has seen quite the transformation!
GO EMILY!!!
My favourite Small entry so far. Gorgeous house!
I'm down the road from you and your place loks great! Love the chairs in the kitchen
Can someone tell me where things like the cable box are hidden, dvr player, game console are placed? Where do you hide these things or do you not have them? I hate to look at them but don't think it's safe to just put them in a drawer? Ideas???
You've got my vote in the small category, Emily!
Seems there are two sofas facing each other in the living room- How far apart are they and is it far enough to have people sit on both and not kick each other when they strech out? - i've been struggling to make a decision about sofa depth - wondering if i have enough space to have this configuration..
I love your place, especially your bedroom. I think I would paint that door the same shade as your kitchen chairs, if it was my place!
Lovely, but it's another post staged with no lamps. (ok, I'm an avid reader, so I'm a little obsessed) And while KY is close to OH, you're not actually in the Midwest, you are in the South.
Love the yellow chairs paired with the white table.
Hahaha! I love that mint green door! Noticed it right away, even before I read your comment. Don't change it! I love an unexpected pop of color, especially when it doesn't really go with anything -- but looks great anyway. :)
@DJUNGST I use just a cable box (which also is DVR) and Apple TV. The cable box is hidden in the drawer (I removed the back panel of that dresser to keep the box cool) and Apple TV is on top next to the TV's base. I'm so sensitive to the heat issue with the cable box that sometimes I still crack the drawer for safety, especially when I'm at work. Everything seems to stay cool so I feel good about it.
@MJS7640 I get dinged on the Midwest thing all the time! Cincinnati, Ohio is a stone's throw from my house (quite literally - the skyline is viewable from my street) so it's hard for me to consider myself the South, even though I'm in Kentucky. Also - I have lamps! Three! I just didn't show them.
@CreativeLicense Thanks for your support of the mint green door. It bugs me that it doesn't "go" with anything even with an eclectic look but everyone loves it. I do like the yellow idea I see in the comments but I've been more drawn to a soft blue lately (by lately, I mean the last 12 hours ha)
@Har The two sofas are very close. Maybe 2.5 feet apart. A long-legged friend could easily sit on one sofa and prop their foot on the other. I tried so many combinations (I wrote about that here) with those two sofas (I was determined to get seating for more than 3 people) and this is by far the one that works the best. My favorite thing about this set-up is that I use the sofas almost as chaises, with my back rested against the arm and my feet up facing the TV. Go for it!
@Mimichan That is so nice to say!
Oh my gosh! I LOVE THIS. Go Kentuckians!
Seriously, I want to come visit. Can I come visit next time I'm on my way to OH? Please? I promise I won't be creepy.
If not, I'll just continue to stare at your pictures and sigh.

Love that you drew the floor plan on a chalkboard. Fun!
It's been said, but those yellow chairs are just...... another level. Beautiful all around.
I love it! Need to know what white you're using! Perfect!
Love the mint green door!
Looks great!!!
I am loving the kitchen chairs and hating you ... Because I want those chairs!!! I am so green- ugh!!! Lol!!!!
So creative! Love it all Pictures do not do it justice
Go Emily Go! I voted for you (and I'm voting for you to keep the minty green door, you know I heart it). GOOD LUCK!!
Anyone have any idea what style those chairs are or what they are called?
First thing I have to say is I'm from Iowa and NEVER have I heard Kentucky being referred to as part of the Midwest. Someone explain please! And if you pay attention, each size category has a specified square footage range to qualify. Our 850 sq. foot apartment houses myself, my husband, a 3 year old and a 2 week old. :) It would be nice to see more families sharing smaller spaces on AP.
Emily, just saw your question to us - we got married at the Carnegie Arts center! Our ceremony was in their theater, and our reception was in the large, main gallery (with the cocktail hour being the whole building, really!). It was the best day EVER. Scott and I met while going to UC - but let's face it, Covington is much more awesome than Cinci.
This is my favorite entry this year, by far. I would live here in a heartbeat. It's so calm and serene with so many great little touches. Absolutely stunning.
I like the simple approach. It really lets the unique things stand out.
I cannot thank everyone ENOUGH for all their support. I am so pleased to be among some of the best little homes I've seen. Last year I came in at 11th place with just over 300 votes, so I'm beyond pleased with my outcome this year. Woo!!
You can still follow me along on my house decorating adventures on my blog, Go Haus Go.
Thanks so much everyone!!
