Summer can be a great time to host house guests. For those who have any extra little room in their apartment, it's nice to be able to give the guests a space of their own. The lucky overnighters hosted by Emily in her Ukrainian Village apartment have this welcoming little room all to themselves.

Emily took a DIY approach to turning a little 8' x 10' room without a closet into an inviting space where a guest will be able to relax. Taking inspiration from rooms across the home design blogosphere, Emily pulled her favorite whimsical elements together into this room. The no-sew pennant hanging above the bed was a rainy day project using leftover fabrics from the quilted pillow shams. After falling in love with pom-poms she saw in a nursery, she decided this is the one room in her apartment where she could incorporate them.

This looks like the perfect space for an overnight guest. Imagine them waking under the colofrul pom-poms on a sunny summer morning, glancing at the vintage Chicago poster, and drifting back to sleep, cozy and comfortable. The only problem Emily may experience with this room is convincing her guests that they can't stay forever!
Emily put together a how-to for the no-sew pennant as well as some of her other projects on her blog.

This room is very sweet and inviting. Well done!
What a great idea to celebrate the guests with a guest room like this one here!
This looks like a great way to incorporate too-cute stuff that would be overwhelming throughout the rest of the apartment. How cheerful! Well done.
Lovely room, wish I had a spare room to copy her ideas.
I smell s'mores!
I don't know - seems a little too upbeat and cutesy for anyone to ever feel actually welcome.
So cute! I love the pennants made with leftover fabric from the pillow shams (and I love the pillow shams!). I would love to stay in this room.
I agree with ChrisGal. It's a little too crafty.
Crafty? Well move over Martha. It is welcoming, tidy, cute and a space for guests. As you usually don't do much more than sleep in the guest room it is perfect.
Thanks for all the wonderful and encouraging feedback, everyone!!
gbtoo - Put it this way, if you showed me this guest room, I'd appreciate the room but probably ask where the nearest hotel is.
Hi ChrisGal, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but my guests do very much appreciate the room. Not only that I put so much time and effort to make a very, very small space as warm and inviting as possible, but for the fact that they don’t have to spend several hundred dollars per night on a nearby hotel room. In fact, I have guests enjoying the space now on their cross-country journey to visit family in the Midwest and back to their home in Texas. I’m very proud of the space, and the fact that I can offer old friends like these a place to stay for free. I understand it’s not your style, and that’s OK.
Emily, ignore the rude, hipper-than-thou commenters. I can't imagine anyone actually checking out the guest facilities to see if they'd deign to stay there, but if people actually do that, it's their loss. Let them pay for a hotel. And who wants to be friends with people like that anyway? It's a very welcoming room, and you've done a great job giving it personality. Love the color scheme. If I could make one suggestion, though--a bigger night table (can't see what's on the other side of the bed.) I need a place to stash my glasses, travel clock, glass of water (I always get thirsty in the night), book, etc.
Thanks, Pencils! The bed is actually against two walls, so there's not much room for a bigger nightstand, unfortunately. (The bed really takes up almost the entire square footage of the room.) I could find one that has more storage and functinality, though. That's definitely something to consider and weigh against giving the chair an out-of-the-way home - a year two improvement! What you can't see from the pictures at all is that it's a vintage bookcase headboard (my mom's from the sixties), so there's an alarm clock, a few books and room for guests to stow water, glasses, etc. hidden behind the pillows.
Pencils - My sleep is much more important than if I offend someone by asking to stay in a hotel instead. I have never spent more than $100 per night on a hotel room - usually less - and I get the relaxing sleep that won't make me grouchy at my friend the next day.
What color is on the walls???
Hi Pattilynne, I know it's a Glidden color, but I'll find out the exact shade. My landlord did the painting before I moved in, but I know where the extra is kept in the basement!!
Very warm and welcoming, the pennants give it a celebratory feel. I think you've done really well with a relatively small space.
