- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love that we were able to take a bland, cookie-cutter apartment and turn it into a home that reflects our personalities. I also love how we were able to mix new, old, hand-me-down, and DIY pieces together into one cohesive look.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- We down-sized from a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment into this one bedroom, one bathroom apartment in order to save money. We had to figure out what we could keep, what we could store, and what needed to go. Then we worked to figure out a layout that would work for all of us...me, my husband, our cat Leo, and our dog Finnley.

I love the photo wall and the pops of happy little patterns. :) Super cute!
I'm a fan of crisp white bed linens and colorful throw pillows for accents. The photo really grabbed my attention. Good choice Emmie.
LOVE IT. I want a full house tour.
Love it! Would also love a home tour. Emmie, tell us about the floral pouf/ottoman in the LR. Did you make it?
I see a lot of you in this apartment. Where is your husband?
People often joke that you can see so much of ME (the mrs.) in our decor, but if it were left to my husband, he'd still be sleeping on an air mattress with his grandmothers afghan as his sole bedding and a walmart neon green butterfly chair for seating. Sometimes all wife isn't a bad thing, and my Mr. wouldn't disagree.
Your place is charming and cozy!
I love the blue lamp in the living room and the adorable Mr. & Mrs. above the bed.
"I see a lot of you in this apartment. Where is your husband"- that is funny! Love the apartment- very happy and pretty.
So cozy and pretty. I love it.
I really like this for what it is- which is a feminine, organized kind of style. It's not my style, but I appreciate the cohesion of a style even if it isn't like mine.
I too felt that this was all 'girl' and saw nothing of a husband but sounds like the Mr. is a-okay with this.
I must say that I am very, very jealous of your blue hanging lamp. DO NOT GIVE THAT UP. I've been searching for that exact one and they goes as high as $350.00 on e-bay. I have a blue table lamp from that era and love it.
So back to your place..it really is lovely. Very cozy...
I like this, but I don't feel like the pictures show us how the small space is utilized. It's pictures of wall art
Sorry, a 742 sq ft 1 bedroom apartment is small? Compared to a house I guess?
@Remy, the floral/pouf is from TJ Maxx. I found it there in October for $35 I believe.
@Akis, I guess you don't see much of my husband's style in these photos, although the big pieces are either originally his, like the bed, or picked out by both of us, like the couch. He had an office in our last apartment that was more him. The accessorizing here is more my style but he's happy with it. "Happy wife, happy life," right?? We're in the process of buying a house and he's super excited to finally have a garage. That will be his space :)
The Mr. and Mrs. signs hanging over the bed are the banners we had on our chairs at our wedding. I didn't want to throw them away so I found a way to repurpose them.
@Lyonstill, the lamp was purchased at a little antique store in my home town for $35. It was a great find.
@GJHall - it might be bigger than what you consider "small" but I don't think it's necessary to judge. Different people have different needs, and you are not always privy to why others want more space.
@gjhall - LOL, have you read the rules of the contest?
Love all the vintage-inspired charm and cheery, but not overwhelming, color palette. I can relate to the husband who would still sleep on air mattress, when I met mine the only furniture he had was a mattress on the floor and a record player. Enjoy your happy home. P.S. We also have a dog named Finley!
$35.00 FOR THAT BEAUTIFUL BLUE LAMP!!! ??? Now my heart hurts!!! KUDOS for such a GREAT FIND!! (Still jealous)1 :oD
One flowered poof and a flowered bed pillow and the place isn't fit for a man?
what a great way to incorporate your wedding into your bedroom, Emmie ;) best wishes... can't wait to see what your house looks like!
Very pretty: VERY girly.
I love your dining chairs!
i'm not really getting a feel for the space from these photos. your husband is lucky to be getting a garage; mine has a section of a cupboard (affectionately named the 'man area')! ;0)
I think I only saw pictures of the walls and not the actual space. ? Lovely all the same though.
Can’t tell much by these pictures. Stop focusing on the walls & let’s see the “room”.
I just love the arrangements of photos and the calm relaxing colors in your home. I just want to plop down on your couch and spend happy hours reading there! :-)
Cute other than the Mr. & Mrs. signs. I can't believe that there are still women who choose to use Mrs. and change their names.
I think it's perfectly fine that you gotten so much say-so on the decor-- my husband questions a lot of my design choices, but at the same time his idea of the perfect room includes bare white walls with the only furniture being a la-z-boy recliner and a big screen tv. Ain't gonna happen, guy.
Reppin' KCMO!
