I really love the recent trend of couples having professional engagement photos taken before the wedding. Besides the fact that it gives you photos to include on a Save the Date announcement or wedding website, it's also just a really great excuse to get some good photos of you and your soon-to-be spouse without the grand wedding garb. Just you and your sweetheart in a snapshot of your life.

Some couples opt to get dressed up to the nines for their e-session and snap stunning shots in a museum or just walking around the city. But if you're up for something a little cozier, I happen to think that the best place to schedule your engagement portrait session is right at home.

Here's why:

It captures real life, and you can document the things you really do.

Like cooking dinner. Not climbing trees, frolicking through a vineyard or swinging on a swing set at a playground. Unless you really do those things all the time. In which case, carry on.

It's like a house tour shoot, too.

Even if you feel like your place isn't "done," trust me, you'll love being able to look back at the place you called home during this time in your lives. (And if you get amazing photos, submit them to Apartment Therapy!)

You can wear relaxed, comfy clothes.

In fact, it's better if you do. You'll like looking back at pictures that actually look like you.

You get to have breakfast in bed.

Coffee, pastries. The whole deal. If you need an excuse to order in breakfast like you're calling for room service at a hotel, this is the perfect occasion.

You can include your pets and kids.

And it won't be as much of a hassle as dragging them along to wherever else you'd think of having e-pics taken. No babysitter or leash handler needed. Just you and your (possibly furry) family.
