We visited our friend this week and hadn't been over to her cute home in a while. When we walked in, we were greeted by the most amazing scent.
Our friend had a small candle lit with an lovely light pine scent. We thought it was a great house candle - not too fragrant or overwhelming. We immediately told her how amazing her home smelled and she replied that this particular candle is the candle that she likes to use when she has friends and guests over.
This got us to thinking about what we do when we have friends over. We like to put out a tray of water with fruit slices. While we almost usually go straight to some wine drinking, the water is our welcome item to make our guests comfy. And we enjoy doing this whether we are entertaining one person or a whole group.

Some coffee beans in the bathroom is a great trick I picked up from none other then Virgin Airlines.
So what candle IS it?

My "welcome item" is my two large, friendly dogs. That's my welcome scent, too.
Yeah, what kdear said.
What candle is it?
I like the idea of water. Simple, yet I don't think I've seen anyone do that. I use scented candles by Stonehenge in the bathroom, nice lighting and candles elsewhere, and vino with little snacks of course, and tunes on the stereo. If it's daytime I like to make espresso and have little biscuits. Depends on the season/time of day/type of guest.
Seriously, what kind of candle?
Offering them a drink!
I light a candle as well - Apple Valley is what it's called. Light scent. Everyone always walks in and tells me it smells delicious. :) And the flickering of the flame is a nice ambience as well.
The candle is the Archipelago - Jasmine Hibiscus. Lovely!

I light my Anthropologie Volcano No. 6 candle, and everyone loses their minds. It's the greatest. Candle. Ever.
I put cloves and lemon peel in my fireplace humidifier. I also always offer a beverage of some sort
Tea!
I never thought of this! I really like the idea of the fruit in water. (are those cucumbers? awesome!) I do usually light candles, I tend to like "fall" scents, warm and spicy.
Usually the biggest welcome they get is that the place is actually clean for a change!!!
My adorable Jack Russell who is 18 yrs old and still very excited to have people over, he then ushers them into the kitchen for a drink of their choice.

RebeccaATLA: I don't get it. Does the Archipelago Jasmine Hibiscus candle really give off a "lovely light pine scent"? Sounds flowery to me...
A soy orange blossom candle in the bath, a fresh pot of coffee in the kitchen, febreze in the entry and wine/chocolate real and candle form in the dining/living rooms. Guest rooms it is always a soy cucumber candle. Wonderful lighting, fresh flowers and your set.
Oops I meant "Stonehenge" by Archipelago. Strong, but yummmy!
i love the mexican hot chocolate candle by pacific during autumn
I personally really like a fresh crisp smell ... I use Washed Cotton Eau de Toilette #784 by GAP to perfume my space. Everyone loves it and always says how inviting and clean it smells.
I also have a thing for vanilla scented candles, but that's only for special nightly guests.
I actually throw open the windows for at least a half hour prior to having people over, even in the dead of winter. I like my place to smell fresh and neutral; I dread that closed-off, dead air smell.
My cat is usually the one who peeks at guests from behind me...and runs like mad if they try to pet him. I do offer drinks right away, but I like the idea of having a pitcher of cold water with sliced fruit or cucumbers out. It looks really attractive.
I also like cucumbers and orange in water. Sometimes with mint, sometimes not.
Cinnamon diffuser right by the front door. I love when people walk in smelling spices.
Our welcome item has four legs, fur and big brown eyes. She often presents her own welcome item -- a stuffed hedgehog. Most people react pretty well.
lol, Ladymantel, I live in a old nun convent, so its creepy'ish', large, and has lots of pews and kneelers and weird old churchy stuff, I feel I need all those things to warm the place up, especially when the furnace gets going, spoooooky. Also kinda smells like old lady in the kitchen/bath, has since we moved in. Wish I didn't have to move...
