I love to entertain, but for the longest time I assumed my 650 square foot apartment was too small to host more than a few guests. Despite my space constraints, my desire to cook for friends pushed me to make it work, so I planned a big dumpling dinner anyway. The guest list started out with 5 people, then grew to 9, then eventually 12…
Not one to turn guests away, I found a way to pack my friends into my humble home for a Dumpling Extravaganza. I set up 2 dining tables, the main one in my eat-in kitchen, and a folding table in the adjacent living room. I covered the tables in craft paper, bought a bunch of $1 coordinating sauce and soup bowls from Chinatown, and printed out place cards for a customized touch. The Fancy Dinner Party came together with relatively little effort and money, and was a huge hit!
My dumpling dinner was so fun, the following fall, I decided to start a supper club: Supper Club Numero Uno. I had to think of ways to make the space feel fresh and exciting for guests, so I changed the cuisine and color palette, then bought some colored paper and went crazy with the arts and crafts decorations. I made crepe paper flowers, paper flags, and graphic paper place mats.
I'm surprised by how comfortable 12 people can be in such a small place. Maybe I'll invite more people next time!
