We remember well the years we lived without a dining table in our small studio apartment. Looking back, entertaining there stands out as a fun time just making it work.

Some things that helped:

  • Floor pillows: Allow seating for many without taking up a lot of room when not in use. This is great for casual entertaining with close friends, playing games and sharing a simple party foods.
  • Kitchen counter spread: Create a buffet-style spread on the kitchen counter that encourages guests to help themselves and mingle while eating. If your kitchen is short on countertop space, add to it with a large over-sink cutting board.
  • Coffee table: This can be a very spirited place to gather 'round, and there's nothing to stop you from setting up your party spread right at the coffee table.

Our old studio apartment had deep interior windowsills that were at about counter height. We were even known to set up party foods there at the windowsill, encouraging guests to move from window to window (there were only three in the whole apartment!
