IKEA Entertainment Center Meets Electric Fireplace

It's all too common of a situation: you're out shopping and you see something new/updated you totally want, but already already own, whether it be furniture or tech. The trick to staying content without breaking the bank while also updating is to learn how to hack your current piece into something you'll love even more — even if that means hacking your TOBO to house an electric fireplace!

Jim submitted his unique IKEA transformation to IKEA Hacker and we're pretty blown away. He took a trip to his local hardware store and saw an entertainment center he liked, complete with an electric fireplace. He really loved the look of the piece, but knew he loved his IKEA TOBO even more and the wheels in his head began to turn. He knew he could hack his current piece to house his own electric fireplace, and so the work began.

Using the IKEA TOBO and an 18" Fixed Glass Electric Fireplace Insert that he purchased for $250.00 he was well on his way to success. Jim chose this specific electric fireplace because of the timer and remote control feature. The fireplace is also made from LED's, so there's never a need to change any bulbs. There's a digital thermostat with numerical readout as well!

This hack worked in his best interest because he was able to remove the middle drawers in the TOBO that he was never really too fond of. In place of those drawers he stuck the fireplace insert and it fit perfectly. He didn't want to waste the drawers he removed so he installed one on each side — that way he was able to keep the storage they provided but in a more aesthetic way. His DVD collection still has a home in the entertainment center as well as his printer too!
