Hostels were once primarily the domain of young people and backpackers, but today, many are working to attract business travellers and families, as well. Owners realize that all types of money-conscious travellers are interested in dynamic, social environments where they can catch a few winks, grab a bite to eat and meet interesting people. After all, isn't making new friends one of the great things about travelling? Add innovative design to the mix, and you’ve got a combination that's hard to beat. Be it a hostel or a hotel – today's traveller has more accomodation choices than ever!

Great collection! I love looking at these roundups. I've got a lot of them saved. One day I'll make it to Berlin..
I'm looking for a place like this to stay in Montreal in a few weeks. Does anyone have any ideas?
The CitizenM at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is fabulous, yes, but it's hardly a hostel!
The City Hostel in Seattle should be on this list! The hostel serves as a showcase for Seattle artists, each of whom got a chance to use the rooms themselves as canvases. I should add that it's comfortable and squeaky clean, the owners and staff are amazing, and the location is perfect--close to everything, but not in the middle of the market which can be sketchy. (I should add that I don't work there! I stayed there for a few weeks last year while relocating to Seattle.) Check out the virtual tour on their site: http://www.hostelseattle.com/
A real link would be nice: City Hostel
These are fabulous! Anyone know if a hostel of this caliber exists in London? Going in two weeks and still don't have a place to stay because all the hostels are so off-putting....
Inspiring me to travel!
Wow, the Chicago hostel must be under new management? I stayed there 5 years ago before I found an apartment and it did not look like that. It was really shabby then.
I don't think it's remarkable that hip hostels exist in other countries. It *is* unusual to find hip ones here in the states.
I tried staying at a hostel again after decades of not being in one, in Vancouver BC. The location/amenities were fine. The only problem with hostels is that they are noisy at night. I don't know what it is about travelers that they feel they must socialize and walk up and down the hall at all hours. Never again.

Warrior Two, agreed! I stayed there in January - best hostel bathrooms I've seen, and the walls were just plain neat. (Although the beds were nothing special, unfortunately - your standard squeaky bunks.)
