Escapes: Three Rivers, Oregon

This one slipped by a moment too late for for Escapes month—but, in the spirit of vacations, we're going to pretend it's still August. The New York Times tipped us off to the Three Rivers Recreation Area near Madras, Oregon, a subdivision that is completely off the grid...

Houses there range from trailers to large new solar-powered houses, like the one you see above. What's interesting to us is the shift in approach. According to the New York Times article, old timers at Three Rivers liked the rustic simplicity. Want a hot shower? That involved heating water on a camp stove and poking holes in a coffee can. Families like the one that built the house above are still interested in teaching their kids about energy and water conservation, but they're doing it by teaching their kids how to maintain the batteries for the solar system so they can watch web video over a satellite internet connection.

This seems to us like a place where the old and new environmental movements are colliding head-on. It will be interesting to see what happens...
