Name: Essley (10 months)
Location: Chicago, Illinois

In addition to the obvious fact that this room is special to me because it's my daughter's, it's also special because I got to design it from scratch. It used to be our guest room, and I was able to make it a blank slate - everything except the carpeting was redone. We pulled out all of the furniture, took down the art and decor, repainted the walls to a pale grey to brighten the room (they used to be a very dark grey), and started all over.

We knew that we were having a girl but we were both drawn to more gender neutral color schemes, so I decided to go with black, white, and grey, with pops of vibrant primary colors. Babies love the contrast of black and white, and they're also attracted to bright colors, so in addition to liking the aesthetic itself, I also liked creating a space where I knew she'd probably enjoy the colors as well.

The other great thing about neutral paint and furniture colors is that as she gets older and develops her own tastes, we can easily change the decor if she decides that she is mommy's polar opposite and falls in love with pink and ruffles and fancy details (things that may not be my thing these days, but that as a little girl I adored). I also wanted to keep the overall design minimal, clean, and modern, without a lot of excess in terms of embellishments. And here is the result.
