Name: Ethan (2)
Location: Alexandria, VA
I was quite attached to Ethan's birch tree nursery in our old house. It was where I 'nested' during my pregnancy, where I saw my mood board visualization come together, and where Ethan rested his tiny head for his first six months. I painstakingly painted beautiful birch trees on the walls over a rich robin's egg blue - it was perfect. But then we moved.
We moved to Old Town Alexandria in Virginia and into a rental house with all-white walls. I thought it would be so hard to recreate our beloved "Birch Tree Nursery". I thought at first the white would bother me. But there is something about the old wooden floors, exposed beams, and details of the new place that make the white walls seem okay.
Therefore I was challenged to add the robin's egg blue and rich orange colors to Ethan's nursery without paint. Using fabric-covered cornices, handmade bunting, decals, and artwork I was able to drum up a space that would keep my Peanut cozy.
The birch tree and bird decals were a set I bought from NouWall after days of scouring Etsy, looking for the perfect birch trees. I really wanted to paint the trees right on the wall, but decals seemed like a better option since we are renting. They arrived quickly and just as pictured, all at a cost of around $100. The trees are a dark gray color, the leaves orange, and birds turquoise. I actually painted the birds with a robin's egg blue acrylic paint so they would match. I didn't think it would work, but it did!
The cornices were a snap to put together and cost about $20-25, making them an inexpensive addition to the room. The chair was my absolute favorite purchase out of all the nursery gear...how often do you get to buy an orange chair?? Okay, yes, it was pricey. BUT, we've used it every day for two years and it's super comfy. I feel like our snazzy chair is really showcased in the new room, front and center. I love that it's a glider/rocker so pinched fingers or toes are not a concern. A foam cube covered in a fun, soft flannel material made a perfect ottoman. Ethan likes pounding his hands on it and I like putting up my feet during story time every night.
My other favorite part of this room is the shelving 'collage' above the chair. I wanted to feature the beautiful books my parents kept safe for us since my childhood--through about seven out-of-state moves. Just glancing at a book brings a flood of memories. I LOVE reading them to Ethan. Throw in a few photos, stuffed owls, and a big letter 'E' painted robin's egg blue, you have a very eye catching display that adds a lot of color and interest to the room.
I made a lovely mobile out of card stock. Ethan loves it, and I love that it is modern and artsy while still serving its purpose. Crazy what some fishing line, wooden dowels, and card stock will get you! I'd say this came together for less then $10.
For more "art" I updated a needle point piece (done by my mom before I was born -- we reframed it), framed some pretty orange and blue fabric in quilting circles, and added some sweet puppy tail hooks.
Our Old Town abode is really feeling like 'home'. I decided before we moved here that even though we were renting, I was going to treat the house like it was ours. Especially with Ethan's room! The Peanut has to have a fun nursery. So while we act with discretion when it comes to permanent changes like paint (even though we were given the okay by our landlords) we're going to need a big bucket of spackle to fix all the holes in these walls.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I love the room, so peaceful and yet so clearly a child's room.! The mobile is wonderful, incredibly visually interesting, well done!
This room contains a lot of trendy things that I normally don't care for, but in this case I really like that the room does not feel too overdone and the trendy bits are actually quite personal. The tree decals are a perfect example- I love that you originally had painted birch trees and completely understand the need for decals in a rental to replicate the original nursery. And while owls are everywhere, I love that the owls on your shelves look personal and collected over time. Finally, I like the accessible high-low aspect- you spent a lot of a chair you love and you use, but there's the lovely IKEA dresser and, since I own that rug, I know it's very inexpensive. And the cornices are so sweet. Nice job- it's a lovely room.
I hate to say it but the fact that your little one is hanging out on his changing table scares the begeebus out of me. At 6 months old I rolled off mine when my Mom turned her back just long enough to grab a pair of pants from the dresser behind her and I fractured my femur and split one of the "soft spots" in my skull.
Not trying to freak anyone out, but that's all I can think of when I see the first picture. ;)
Cute!
Agreed. He doesn't particularly looked strapped in! It was a total distraction to anything else the post offered.
Just to put all minds at ease, my husband is standing two millimeters from the edge of the camera edge watching our little man. Ethan just happened to be wearing orange that day and fit in the color scheme so well! We couldn't resist including him. Thanks for the concern though!
Becky
I have full confidence that Becky and her husband have the baby's safety under control. It would be more fitting to comment on the design of the nursery - I think it's the perfect sort of feature for AT. Becky was able to take the design components from a nursery and space that she (and her family) loved in a house that they loved, and translate that into a new city, a new (rental) house, and made what could have felt like a very sterile space into a place that recalled their first home.
It is sometimes hard to think past the restrictions that non-ownership bring to the table, but that's what this site is ultimately about.
Nice job, Becky!
I love Old Town! And I love the colors you used. You mention the chair, and I see it's from GoodWorks...is that the one based in St. Louis? I searched for a site and found the one for the St. Louis company, but uh, the site looks less than professional.
Now this is a sensible nursery (and just as lovely) as compared to the OTHER "designer" nursery tour.
He is their baby, I am sure you don't have to worry about his safety.
The room is beautiful..so airy, fresh, light and looks darn comfortable too.
Me too!
What a bright happy room. I particularly love the bunting strung across with the trees. Very nice!
yay old town and I think it's totally adorable. The color palette makes it modern and fun
Thanks for the nice comments everyone! Pi, I did get the chair at the St. Louis GoodWorks. I agree, their website is not great, but the store itself is fantastic. I could go crazy in there!
If referring to Dylan's nursery, you're as impolite and ignorant as the other posters who think they "know" the family based on their zip code and the furniture in their nursery. I know Dylan's mother, and what was written in three paragraphs by an Apartment Therapy writer doesn't do them any justice nor does it necessarily represent their situation. Anyone who opens up his/her home for the vultures and vitriol on this site should be commended because it's shameful how people responded.
And not to steal little Ethan or his parents' thunder, I think this nursery is very cute.
Hoonuit, the response to Dylan's nursery tour was disgraceful! I'm sorry that your friend had to read that.
Ethan's room is so adorable. I love your color choices. I am not usually a fan of bunting but yours looks really neat and well-crafted. And of course, the owls are fab.
I'm sorry to offend, I guess it just immediately put to mind that falls off of furniture are one of the single most preventable but oh-so-common accidents for babies. I don't see an adult anywhere near close enough and I was worried for the wee one. Seriously, I don't think an adult could prevent an injury based on this photo because anyone out of frame is not close enough. I was a bit harsh, but I really was distracted. I've seen babies on floors and in cribs in these posts, but never one where the baby looks quite vulnerable. I know so many who've either been victim of a fall and had an injury or a parent that said it happened to them when they least expected it.
I too saw all the TRENDY items all rolled up in one and LOVE IT! Great color combination!
Hi Becky,
The room is lovely! Great job. Can you share how you made the bedskirt? The crib I purchased has the mattress at the same height and I've been thinking about sewing one up. Any help you could offer would be great!
Thanks Laurel! My mom actually made the bed skirt because at the time we did this room (2.5 years ago) I had never sewed anything in my life! She just kind of figured it out, but this site should help you...it's basically the same thing. Good luck!
Love the shelving collage - a perfect collection of things old and new. Gorgeous nursery - well done!
could someone please go stand by that baby... freaking me out a little.
Beautiful and very inspiring! Thanks for sharing with us.
Know what's freaking me out? The concern trolls here.
What a nice nursery. Love the color scheme and the airy feel! I'm looking for a similar chair for our baby #2's nursery, as there's not a lot of space and I can't stand those big beige-y glider-ottoman combos. (Also, I love my Hemnes dresser!)
Thank you!!!!
The room is gorgeous-I love it. However, I, too, was distracted by the baby seemingly left alone on the changing table. Glad to know dh was there, but it took away from the room!
the room is lovely. great ideas for rental living.
that said, it would never occur to me to make comments about someone's parenting decisions on a design blog. seeing that adorable baby didn't even register danger in my head, how it is distracting is beyond me. Sounds like a bunch of bored people need to feel better about themselves by criticizing. Because one person making the comment wasn't enough...let's just all pile on and REALLY make the designer feel horrible!
