If retro style is your thing, but vintage mechanical parts and fraying cords aren't, this
Allaire Desk Fan in Brushed Nickel from Restoration Hardware might be more up your alley. Priced from from $99 to $149 depending on size, the oscillating fan made with solid steel construction is also available in black.

Hunter makes a couple of all-metal retro-look fans, in various colors, available through Amazon.com for between $60-$103, depending on the size. You can see the table fan here.
I am loving vintage looking fans. I just ordered this one:

and I can't WAIT to replace my junky plastic one with it.
I have a retro fan which needs re-wiring - does anyone know somewhere online or in NYC which does this work?
Thank you!!
Never mind the vintage mechanical parts and fraying cords - I want to keep all my fingers intact. Most of those seen above look extremely dangerous.
@spacedman - simple solution: don't stick your fingers in there. Unless you have kids or curious pets I wouldn't expect it to be a problem.
i found a fan at target a few years ago that looks just like that Restoration Hardware one.
i think it might have been "holmes" brand (can't remember since i peeled off the little label)
not sure how much it cost.. though i doubt i would have bought it if it was more than $40.
Whew! I know what you mean. 88 here yesterday in HOTlanta. As I refuse to pay for airconditioning (my house is a sieve anyway), I have ceiling fans. I don't care that they're no longer in fashion, they do the job...who looks up anyway??
i have a 1940s Freshn'd Aire fan that works better than anything you could get these days. When on the high setting, you'd think you were in a tornado.
@KittyAtlanta - More power to you and your green self. It's only the beginning of May! I hope you have a lot of shade trees to go with your ceiling fans.
I kinda want one just for looks...hehe.
I ran my vintage fan for years and suddenly last summer it stopped working. I'm so dismayed. In earlier times an electrician could repair it. Not so sure now. It has worked better than any other fan I've used. It makes me wonder if there were parts I should have oiled.
The only thing about vintage fans is that they're a little scary with the open grids. They look great and usually work good, but I can see accidently severed fingers.
I own this (http://www.casablancafanco.com/product/period_decor/moderne.html) table fan, and love it. I have a young daughter, so an original art deco fan isn't an option!
these are so dangerous for young curious kids
Here are a few vintage looking fans that are actually modern and somewhat safer than those retro ones that we love the looks of:
