European Furniture Warehouse has a sprawling 3-floor showroom on Grand Avenue, filled with contemporary pieces by Blu Dot, Amat, Magis, and other designer furniture manufacturers, as well as replicas of mid-century modern pieces...

The store has been in business since the 1940s, with an emphasis on Italian imports. They sell both to the trade and to walk-ins.

Prices for contemporary designer pieces are on par with or sometimes below other modern dealers. Unlicensed mid-century replicas are made in Italy and generally priced at 1/3 to 1/2 of authentic reproductions.

The staff is helpful and straightforward. When we asked about manufacturers and designers, they were well-informed and happy to talk with us. They're also very up-front about the sticky issue of replicas vs. authentic pieces.

Prices are listed online, and EFW's inventory is huge. Click here for a list of manufacturers. They also carry a wide range of upholstery options.

I really wish this existed in San francisco.
Nice. I just passed this the other day and had never heard of it. Looks cool. Great post. There are a lot of gems out there that nobody knows about.

When design takes priority, the result is often strange closets.
Cool. And I can almost afford a few things here! Thanks for the tip.
If you are in Chicago, come in the store! Often you can find better pricing in the store that what is listed on-line. Also, feel free to call or email for "group prices" if you are lookign at multiple items.... we will work with you! Outside Chicagoland ask for Chris or Jenna. Otherwise, the sale people on our showroom floor (Simon, Vince and Tony) are here to help!
