While it may be obvious to us when it has been raining, a rain gauge might be handy to back up our tales of woe to our out-of-town friends. But more seriously, the device would help us balance the watering schedule of our outdoor plants with the natural bounty of H2O.

Absolutely lovely. However, this is a choice you make strictly for aesthetics. If you're on a budget (or find the idea of $90 for a rain gauge offensive), you can use a tuna can and a ruler or get something for less than $5 from a garden store. Or, if you're lucky like me, you can get one gratis from dear old Dad who has a million from when the bank used to give you one every year. Not so lovely to the eye but special to the heart.
how about using the internet where local rainfall is posted daily for free? saves you $90 and, in san francisco, you don't have to clean that empty glass between april and november?
