The more colorful my life becomes, the more I appreciate the tranquil effect of neutrals at home— not boring beige, but restful grays, peaceful ivories, and serene earth-tones. However, I've found that it's all too easy to cross the line between calm and mushy when it comes to decorating with these muted hues. Thankfully, a little black, whether it be in the form of a large piece of furniture (pictures 1, 2, 6) or a subtle accent (pictures 4, 7, 8), goes a long way. In a rustic room it adds refinement, in sophisticated one it adds edge, and like the little black dress, it goes with just about everything!

Words of advice from my dear grandmother "every room needs a bit of black to bring it up a notch." In 1964 she had her newly built ranch home decorated with the help of an interior designer from Hudson's Department Store and it was one pearl of wisdom she took to heart from the designer and always shared with everyone! It's was etched into my brain early on!
I love all of these rooms. I am a big Darryl Carter fan.
Beautiful. I'll keep these words of wisdom to heart.
Reading this made me smile: "'We call neutral rooms a lot of things...but what we don't hear very often is 'dramatic.'"
I totally agree. Black adds depth and definition to a pale room. I just need to apply this advice to my own home :)
I find the same to be true in non-neutral rooms as well... My kitchen has pumpkin orange walls, bright white cabinets and turquoise glass pulls. The black island grounds everything and keeps it from being a little too over the top.

I learned this accidentally in my own home and I totally believe it's true.
Black is great and these pictures are quite inspiring. I can't think of a room in my house that doesn't have at least some black or dark brown in it.
Does anyone know where I can find a similar bed like the one in photo #5?
