That is your intrepid blogger circa 1978, visiting the cool pad of a very cool aunt. Though the paneling and carpet are admittedly best left in the past, other pieces featured in this photo continue to grace our home today. Those fabulous striped lamps were always a favorite (minus of course their weird pleated shades), and have certainly made the rounds over the years...Lamp Life #1: mid-1970s to 1986- blue striped lamps lived on cool Scan tables in paneled apartment pictured above.

Lamp Life #2: Around 1986, both aunt and lamps moved into a new house decorated in a peach and grey scheme- the lamps were painted peach and the cords painted white.

Lamp Life #3: Fast forward to 1997- aunt moved back to Ireland and left the lamps with mom who promptly replaced the shades and moved them into her bedroom.

Lamp Life #4: January 2008- Lamps tackled as a part of an extended January Jumpstart process. Though we hoped the blue stripes would work in the bedroom, when we started stripping the peach paint, it became clear that the blue stripes were also painted on, not some kind of fired-on glaze as we had hoped. The end result however was still wonderful. The shiny white glaze of the china was undamaged by the paint stripper, and lamps don't look anything like their 30+ years. We found the perfect taupe flocked lamp shades at IKEA, and were able to get the necessary sockets and silver wires at a local hardware store. All shiny and bright, they look lovely on the nightstands also refurbished as part of our January Jumpstart.

Reuse is the part of the green mantra we find it easiest to follow — we love our vintage lamps and see no reason to believe they won't last another 30 years. Oh, and those cool Scan side tables in the top picture? We have those as well...
