Q: I'm swapping my kids' rooms, and my son will be going into my girls' room. Currently, there is white beadboard along the lower half of the room, which to me has always seemed a little more feminine or babyish. Do you have any good examples of beadboard in a boy's room, perhaps painted a color other than white? (I'm thinking gray or a putty color?) My son is almost 9, so I don't want the room to look too youthful, but I also don't think I want to remove the beadboard, either. Thanks!

Editor: My favorite example of beadboard in a boy's room is in Miles and Andrew's shared attic space. Unlike most beadboard that begins at waist level, this covers the whole room, but you get the idea. I think painting yours is a fine idea. Readers, can you point Jennifer to boy's rooms with beadboard/wainscoting or examples of non-white beadboard?

Shaw's Original Fir...
I would paint the walls white and the beadboard blue. We looked at a house before the house we currently live in and all the bedrooms had beadboard adn that is what i was gonna do for our son's room.
I think white beadboard is classic looking and gender neutral, and have even decided to put it in my 4 year old's room. It gets only a little natural light, so I thought the white would brighten things up. Plus, it's great for adding strategic hooks for jackets and hats, etc. So long as the colors and patterns in the room are masculine, just leave the beadboard.
i would really probably leave it white and go for a white, khaki and navy room with red and sky blue as possible other colors.
This link is shown in an adult bedroom with a putty color:

I agree that leaving it white would not make it too babyish or feminine, but seeing as how to you it comes across this way, I think you could totally pull off painting it. A navy blue with white-ish walls could also lead to numerous possibilities. Finally, if you go to a search engine that allows you to only search the images (i.e. bing, yahoo etc.) and type "beadboard in bedroom" several pics come up. Good luck!
I think grey sounds like a great colour for the beadboard of a growing boy. If this is going to be his room for many years, then go for it! Grey is a colour any teenage boy would appreciate - belive me, I'm 18, so I am familiar with what teenagers like, no matter thier stlye.
But if you think you will be moving within the next few years, I would not bother.
i like white or off-white beadboard. i don't think it looks too feminine or baby-ish at all! i would repaint it so it looks fresh and then put a really great color for an older boy on the wall. like an army green. or stick with neutral walls and just do some great pop colors in the curtains, bedding, rug.
Check out Garnet Hill and Pottery Barn websites, they often have photos of rooms with beadboard painted different colors. One of them (I don't remember which, sorry) in a recent catalog showed a boy's room with navy beadboard on the bottom of the wall, a light taupe/khaki color on the top of the walls, madrass quilts on twin beds, and red accents (nightstands, etc). It looked great! Good luck!
of course now I can't find the example I'm thinking of (from my earlier post) but Pottery Barn Kids has some good examples of using bold colors in kids rooms - I would paint the beadboard and go from there
I have always wanted to do a chocolate brown beadboard for a playroom...according to the color of the furniture, you could def do this...with white, khaki, navy, red, green...
You could always leave it white and do maybe a black chalkboard paint above it to make it cooler for a boy...
I also think dark blue beadboard with beige walls would look good.
Of course, what colors do you plan on using? What does his bedding look like, etc? His favorite colors...
